Mc- Farland's well known stock, r The young girl Cockerill who was struck by u locomotive recently, near Shelburne, is progressing very fivor able, and strong hopes are entertain- ed that she will ultimately recover. We are pleased to note that the prop, of the Revere and his minions haye turned champions of law and order, and now if they will reform themselves and not allow respectable citizens to be insulted when passing, no doubt the rowdyism of this town will le almost eradicated. Just so. â€" A sensible man writes as follows Good patronage makes a good paper and a live town, every business man in Town profits by the growth and prosperity broaght about by the newspaper representing it, and should do the square thing m patron- izing these papers. The E'ditor of the Flesherton Ja. vance is whining like a whipped cur. We decline to follow him iu detail, as he appears under various forms and different names. Perhaps that dead animal found under his office steps last week had put him a little off. We hope he may return to hia right mind when the dog days are past. Sheep WoHRiED. â€" Mr. Thos. Ander- son of Glenelu; had his sheep attacked by dogs on Tuesday night last and el' veil of the flock were killed. The dogs were persued until they entered the woo^Js, when they were 1 1st sight of. It is a wonder tn us that so many dogs are kept, the great majority ot which are worse than use- less. Mr. Anderson's loss is heavy. Two men from Switzerland passed through this place last Thursday, having with them a lamed and trained bear. They halted a few hours in the village during which time bruin gave several exhibitions of good train- ing in dancing on his hind feet, acting volunter at drill, climbing a telegrapb pole, etc. A large number of the vil- lagers, young and old, male and fe- male, came out to witness the inter esting sight. The annual missionary meeting of the Church of England will be held in Christ Church, Markdale, on Wed- nesday eveniug.Aug. 8th, at 8 o'clock. After the eveniog^ervice the Rev. W. F. Campbell, Missionary Agent of the Diocesa of Huron; the Rev. George Kevs, Rural Dean of Grey, and the Rev. Mark Tnrnbull, Incumbent of Shelburne will deUver addresses on the Missionary cause in Canada, Of- fertory in aid of the miosioaary fund. The Methodist S. S. Pic-nic came off on Tuesday, in Mr. Geo. Walker's bush. This place is convenient and well suited for such occasions. There was a good turn out and a pleasant time spent. The air was quite cool in the Bhade. yet a barrel of |emooa^® was disposed of gratuitously. The table was laden with an abundance of g»d things which also disappeared rapidly about half past five. Alexander Irwin, Esq.. one of the oldest ahd most respected setth-s of Artemesia Township, died on Wed- nesday morning at the age of 84 years, i Qe funeral sermon will be preached by Rev. Mr. (Jasson, on Sunday next, at 10-80 a. m. The Ladies of the Methodist Church of this place, will hold then: annual Garden Party, at the Parson- age, on Monday evening next. This will be the fourth annual Garden Party held on the 1st Monday in Aug- ust, at the parsonage, and if we should judge from the past, a pleasant and enjoyable time may be expected on Monday evening next the 6th. Ad- mission 15 cents. Fun F03 THE Boys. â€"Quite a number of boys were indulgmg m that healthy and exhilarating sport of taking a bath at McFarland's pond last even- ing, add were having a good time generally. But, it appears a woman living in the vicinity took umbrage at the proceedings, and slipping down to the edge of the pond with feline cauti- ousness, suddenly dumped the dis- carded garments of the boys into the pond Perhaps the boys did not feel like putting her in clothes and all, and perhaps they did However, they went home, some wst, some shirtless, some shoeless and all muttering im- prications if the performance was ever repeated. Better be carefull old woman! Acting under instructions from the Ontario Government, R. W. Phipps,' of Toronto, h\s issued a valuable re- port on the necessity of preserving and replanting our forests. The ur- gercy of this necessity can best be understood when it is stated that whereas all Ontario was one vast forest a century ago now only about one-third of the area (exclusive of the new district6)""is covered with trees. The impending scarcity of fuel and building timber is not the only danger t'lreatened the great danger ahead is the effect which will undoubtedly be produced on the climate and soil by the disappearance of our for- ests. Mr. Phipps has devoted a great deal of time to the study of his sub- ject and has collected a vast mass of information bearing on it. Copies of his report could doubtless be had on application to the Hon. Jap. Young, Provincial Treasurer, Toronto, and the time occupied m its perusal will be prutilably spent.
