John Saijoho, resident near Gore Bny, had the misfortune to have his house burned recently. S. Leveratt, of Orillia, and Jos. Maughan, of Owen Sound, arrived in town via Parry Sound on Saturday evening. $55 was realized from the tea-meet- ing and social held in this village un- der the auspices of the Me'^^hodist Sun- day school. It is reported that the iron steamers Passport and Magnet are to run be- tween (;wen Sound and the Sault ueit summer. One noticeable feature in the set- tlements on this Island is that, in al- most every case, the barns are much better buildings than the houses. A short time ago Louis N. Thibau- deau advertised iiis farm for sale in tiie Expositor. To day he received a post-card from an M 1). in Lindsay requesting a full account of the situa- tiuu. soil and price of farm. The same gentlemen wanted a full descrip- tion of Rydal Bunk, which he will get by return of mail. No one can tell wiit-n or where a paper is read. A ^nod lucal [laper does much for the â-  dvaucemeut of tlie locality in which it is published but in many cases the benefit is n^t se(^n or appreciated. "^be Gardener's Monthly advises t'luit growers that the winter is a very important season iu the management f tiuit trees, and adds "The winter season is a very im- portant one fur the manageir* nt of fruij trees. Pruning is especially impoitaut. Some believe that if the foundation of a tree De prDperW laid iu youtli, there will be no necessity to prune an adult tree. This does not acord tor the writer's experience. An luteilige-ut examiuiitiou, I'oth with the saw and good knife iu hand, should be made every winter. Real f,'ood, htige, healthy leaves in every part of a tree are of vast importacce, and (hose can not be aad when branches tire close together, smothering one another. "It should always be remembered in pruning tliat we want sound, heai- tuy wood to make sound g.owth, aud y t nothing is more common than to se-j in dwarf pears, e-sper-iay^^ho healthy, vi^( rous shoots^ .shortened back, and load|| of weak fruit- spurs left to make the next season's growthl TLiuiug out, not shortening bacK, is what such trees require. "Pruning is very important, but above all, for both apple and pear or- chards, we bespeak a liberal dresbing â€" atop dressing of something or an- other. If no manure is to ha had, even common road sand will be touud to have a benetical influence. Pover- ty of the surface soil is oflenera cause oF fruit failure than '.grass," change of climate," or many imaginable ills broogbt ap from some ghostly cavern of thought to corer np tne poverty of pocket or of iodndtrial inclination."â€"' Canadian Farmer. mil B' ' !: ' lb f I M .M S-A^ • tm^ 'H !•,' :i---i?r i r r'J tm i I-i 'â- -â-  'k- I ' i'
