I hid tbe pleasure cf meetiof Mr. Eichardson, formerly ot MsrVdale, here, I had just time for a few minutes talk with him aa our outfit did^ot stop in the fort, and I didnot wish to be left too far behind. Mr. B. is the Mily man I have seen iu Montana that I ever saw before, and he said that I was the only one he had seen. After we pass a short dijtonoo from Fort Keogh we come to an encamp- ment of Cheyenne Indians, I counted a,bout one hundred camp." butAeie be ft great many more. The squaws were busy drying squashes r««nP*"8- "' falo meat and tanning hides the In dians were either sitting smoking their pipes or saddUng their ponies, tliey fteem to Lave a great number of yery sice pouies. We are now camped about tweJye miles above Fort KeogL, aud the couu- try does not seem any belter than what we have travelled through. I remember hearing tho whistle bl'.w ou striking the dock, and thi a I h aid the cry of fire, but I conid scarcely be- lieve that the persons doing tiie shout- ing meant all tliey said, and I did not get up as soon as I miglit, but wLeu mj partner, Mr. R. McKenzie, came to the door of my state-rooir aud call- ed for me to get out, tLat tlio boat was ou fire, I began to fully realize my ijosition, and picking up my coat, vest, aud overcoat, I got out of there just as fast as I knew how. I Mirew my clothes on the wharf and raL back for my valise, but the baggage room was so full of smoke that I couldn't see, aud I took another man's valise instead of my own. I then done what I could to help save some of tlie pas- sengers, but I fiupposo you Lad full particularj at the time it happened, BO I nesd not be giving you derails, When the fire was over, I found I had either dropped my vest iu running out or some one had picked it up off the wharf, so I was minus of most of my clothes, watch aud some money, but I felt thankful that I got cff as safe as I did. Many of the passengers lost all their clothes except what they were slee'Miig in. After staying two days in Duluth, a party of thirty of us started for the Yellow Stone Valley, by the Northern Pacific R. R. The road fir a coiisid- ernblc distance runs close to the St. Mary's River, aud there is some splen- did scenery, sometimes we appoarod to be sweeping along a hundriid foot above the water. I lilic tho appear- ance of the country through .Minmsota and Dakota a ory well, but the crops appeared to be very light. Harvest had just commenced when we passed through. There is hundreds of miles of land iu the western r»«t of Dakota on the road, not taken up yet. if any one from Artemcsia is thinking oi settling iu Dakota, I would advise them to have a look at the land round Autilopc Station. In the aftenioou of tbe third we cross the line into lion- tana, aud iu the eyeniug we reach Gleudive, a small village at the end of the road. I will venture a descri)tion of this wonderful place. I think there is about fifty places of business, it has an Opera House, Dance House, aud a Music Hall, and the balance in res- taurants and saloous, all of which are under canvas or mud covered huts. Of our party of thirty which left Duluth only nine rea':Led the Yellow Stone Valley. Many were tLe stories told us about Indians, rattlesnakes, j bad water, c., but as yet I see no cause of fear; the water is very good, true there is plenty of Indians BIRTHS.
