Miss Edna Jaques Gave Splendid Lecture in Church A very pleasant evening was spent last Wednesday evening when Miss Edna Jaiques, famous Canadian paet-locturer. eave an initeresiting lectui-e. hijfhlighted 'by !her com- ments on the incidents which promp- ted her to compose the poems which she read. .After welcoming those inattend- ance. paiiticularly members of the .Markdale C.G.I.T., Miss Emma Oliver introduced the guest artists, Mrs. R. Andrews, soprano soloiat, Mrs. Milne, organist, and Mass Janet Maiopiherson, I soprano soloist, who was accompanied by her sister, Margaret. Rev. A. ,Q. Macpherson introduced the guest of the evening. Miss JaQues was bom near Coll- in gwood and moved West with her parents while stUl a young girl. She ij> a very witty and amusing speak- er, but at times serious and extrem- ely interesting. Her method of re- cirtine her poems was unusual but effective. "My Neig<hlbors Clothes- line" igives an idea 'of What can be deducted of the housewife's charac- ter by fooking over the lundry blow- ing in the breeze. How much a .-eed Ciitalojrue means in the Spring to people on the prairies and in west- ern isolated areas is given in "To a Seed Meivhanrt." MJiss Ja<iues i)ut i irtto verse the thoughts of all eood j mothers in her poem ::My Daujrh- ti-r." Her ".Above the Timber Line" wiiij written after a wearisome hike and h<nse-'back ride. It was amus- â-  injrly relate<i by the speaker. In a tribute to church workers who so fiathfully aid in the w^rk of the church, she has written "The Paith- fu; Fe^v."' Her closing room was "I'll Sing for You." Her entire lecture was exhilerat- ine and the audience was loath to have her finish. It would be a !>^ea^^ure to hear her again. The lecture was under the auspice? of •be C.G.I.T., of which Miss Oliver is the leader. While in Flesherton Miss Jaques was the guest of Rev. and 'Mr^s X. G, Macpherson, Miss Oliver and Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Bellamy. She is a cousin of Mr. Bellamy. Service Station Burns After Explosion And Occupants Escaped, Losing All in The Fire Disaster sti-uck in the vilUige at about one o'clock Thursday after- noon of last week, when an explo- sion occurred in the B-A gas station and restaurant operated by Mr. and Reg. Boden, who were lucky to escape with their lives, along: with their son, George, and a custonier, M^. Ruesell -Andre^vs, barl»er in the village. When the explosion occurred Mr. and Mrs. Boden and Mr. .Andrews but it was seen that nothinc- could be done to save the building and efforts were made to save the Mun- shaw hotel, 75 feet away, and a barn at the rear of tiie service station owned t'- ^'t. Welton, but the hi'ut Was So intense that this soon caug'ht fire. It was at tiiis time, when the fire was spreading that a call for help was made to neighboring municipalities for assistance, which came from Durham. Dundalk, Co^-l- tbe .Air Force, in which M scrvnit f )r four years. Their daughter. Donna, 10, had jua-t gone to school before the explosion occurred. The cause of the explosion will remain a mystery as an examination liy niombers- of the B-.A Oil Company and inspectors failed to find the cause, and Mr. Boden said that thei'e was nothing in the cellar that he knew of which would cause the blast, ("i.mpany ntficials are ^aid to thinlv .As long as cities have most of the poT>ulation that's what will be wrong -^ith the cotmtrv. .A eatastrophe is when the ladies" Ijridge club meets with nobody ab- ^*:v.t tv be talked about. •♦4*<><->««x->-x->4~><K«<"KK«<«<^~:~KK~>-:~:-:-x-:~:«-x~:~:~:-<~>4~:^^ « <> * The Home of Tasty Baking Specials This Week SPECIAL EASTER CAKE HOT CROSS BUNS Delivery on l-'riday. Their loss of all tfceir household and restaurant eq»ipmeBt aroused the sympathies of the sa- tire coninrunity and Friday maminif a fund was started to assist them in recouping their losses. In a few houi-s several hundred dollars hai been subscribe<i and this Tuesday morninjf over .SS50.00 had already bt>en collected. Rev. -A. G. Needless to say. both Mr. ;in<l Mrs. Boden have been over- wiielmed with the kindness «ma •hnughtfiilness which has been show* :iieiii in their hour af need by die- r.t-ople of this conwiiunity and others who are strangeis to tiiem, snd words cannot express their feeling* :it this time. The Boden family are yiiests of .Air. and Mrs. Ja.s. Stewart at the i)resent time. Miss Kate- Macmillan. who teaches in Toronto, i>as generously opened her home »• "hem until Dermanewt arrangeinen*8 can be made. The above picture shows the B-A Oil Company sei-vice station and the close proximity of the bam at the rear of the suitioii, with the hotel, i was within range of the blaze. The .At the e.xtreme riglit is the building j tourist cabins are not shown in the owned by Douk- Mc.Arthur, which i picture. were standing beside a pinbaU game when they w«re suddenly thrown to the floor from the blast. Tables, booths and other fixtures were over- turned and a counter was thrown on top of Mi-s. Boden, from which she was extricated by the men. Mr. Bo- den ran upstairs where his 5-veai- old son, George, was playing and carried him down the stairs throug-h the thick black smoke which filled the building. When the blast came three youna: men. Bob Tumey. Jim Johnston and Frank Taylor, were outside the building and they had to force the front door open, due to the cai^iet and other things piled against the opening. Those inside were then able to escape. None of those in the restaurant were injured from the e.Xiplosion. In a matter of only a few minutes the entire sitnicture was a mass of flames, and Mr. and Mrs. Boden and George escaT>ed with only what the'- were wearing, th^y didn't even have time to take the money from the cash register. The large wHndo\.-s in the service station section were blown out and .scattered for a hund- red feet outside. Mr. Boden's car was at the side of the building and a front window of it \vas demo'lished. Within a couple minutes after the fire sii-en gave the alami. the village fire figbtine equitxinent was on hand ingwood, Markdale, Chatsworth and Owen Sound. The Durham brigade arrived after the fire had been under conti-ol for some time, but they laid their hose line from the river, a is- tance of several hundred yards and pumped water to the scene of the fire. Collingwood pumper also did excellent work in making: sure the flames did not spiead. .At one time the (Table end of the Munshaw House blazed up from the terj'itic heat, but the local brigaxle kept conti-ol and no further outbreaks occurred. Har- old Best owns several cabins that v.ere close to the burning buildings. one of them being only fifteen feet from the bam, and have fireproof sidinsr and i-oofing, which kept them from destruction. Paint on the doors peeled, however. The contents of the cabins weae c:»rried to a safe distance. The large plate gla.ss windows in the F. H. W. Hickling store and the Best restaurant were cracked from the heat and the paint blistered. The plate glass in the Hickling store wa.-^ rtM>laced this Monday afternoon. The service station u'as of stone and brick veneer construction and was an ritti-active building. Mr. and Mrs. Boden took over the operation of the seiwice station and restaura'it two and a half vears ago, shortly cfter he received his discharge from that an old tank, not now in use. might have leake<l a-asoline left in which spread into the ground and came into the cellar near the air conipresser. It is not likely that the cause will ever be known. The barn o%vned by G. B. Welton had some boats stored thei'ein, five of them being burned, besides some furniture, a stove and other things, ffis loss will exceed $1,000.00 and the loss to MV. Boden and to the B-.A Oil Company, which owned the sei-vice station will amount to about $20,000.00, partly covered by insur- ance. Mr. Welton did not have any insurance on the barn. The local telephone system went out of business at 1 ;l!0 p.m., when the fire burned a telephone pole dir- ectly in front of the service station across from the telephone office, and ali telephones lines, local and long distance were severed, bat not be- fore the telephone operators had .â- ?ent through their calls for aid ^nd also informed their headquai'ters telephone service would be severe*! in a short time. The caile repair crows from Owen Sound, Kitchenei- and BU'arttford were on hand by six o.m. and service was restored by 0:30 Friday nioming. They accom- plished a splendid job, working all night on the task. .A new pole was 1 1 pcted on Monday. GOOD FRIDAY AND EASTER SERVICES IMTED (HIRCH P.VSTOR.AL CH.ARGE Mrs. E.
