The firit day of the Chinese Spring camm in oiliciaiiy on Friday of last Week, and an old saying \\u . to the effect that at 10.30 in tb*; liiaming of that day eggs could Le stood on end. Mrs. J. L. Ma.-iuean of the Park Hotel heaid this given over the radio the week previous and decided to test it out. She had several fresh eg'g.'i and at 10 a.m. cosmnenced to set them on their end, but was not successful until 10.30, when she had two of them performing nicely, sitt- ing on top of the diningroom table. There was no hole or indentation on the table, but was perfectly level. The editor saw this work and knows that everything was above board. Mrs. MacLean stated that an egg with a broken yolk would =tand up- right without assistance, but one of the eggs which had been standing uprig'ht was broken into a dish, and was perfectly fresh with the yolk intact. Your editor never hear.l of this phenomenon before, and others to whom we have mentioned the experiment had never, either. Try to stand an e^g on end on a perfect- ly flat surface. Wm. Stewart Guest Of Honor On 75th Birthday I Mr. Wm. A. Stewart, who cele-j bratsd his V5th birthday on January .'ilat, was Jie guest of honor in the home of his daughter, Addie (Mrs. I). Oar. 15 Thorlow Ave., Toronto, when friends and relatives gathered for a buffet supper. For 47 years Mr. Stewart was a conductor with the C.P.R., running out of Fort Wil- liam and Winnipeg, and since his retirement 10 years ago, has been residing in Toronto. Enjoying good health and very active, he is an en- thusiastic member of the Flesherton Old Boys and Girls Association. He was the recipient of gifts and best wishes from friends and relatives from far and near. ! Intennent was made in Flesherton Cemetery Chapel ;.n Tuesday, Feb. 8th, 1M9. A well attended Progessive-Con- sei-vative executive meeting of the i riding of Grey-Bruce wa* held in the Legion Hall, Durham. Presi- dent Campbell Grant of Walkei-ton was in charge of the meeting. Many matters relative to the interests of the party were discussed. In view of the impending federal election, it was decide<i to hold a convention in Durham on Friday, February 25, in the Dell Theatre, to choose a candi- J date. The members of the executive decided to try to secure a prominent speaker for the convention and they also hope to have a lady speaker. The name of Peter Lambertus, Walkerton di-uggist, ha.- been men- tioned as a possible candidate. Last month wa^i the worst Januarl cilice l'J42 for traffic deaths, with jiii-Ilminary itpoits showing at leait 50 persons fatally injured on Ont- ario roads. Si.xteen of these tragic ca.sualties resulted from only eight of the month's accidents as the spectre of death on the streets and highways snatched a headstart for iy49, challen^g provincial and local accident prevention program to redouble*! elfort during the com- ing year. Worst feature in the month's fatal accident reports was an alarming increase in the number of elderly people killed. .\t least 17 of the victims were over 65 years of age, compared with iive deaths in this age group during January of the year before. All but four of the 17 elderly rictinrs last niontli were pedestrians. Moi'e encouraging was the reduction, from six to three, in the number of lives lost in traffic among children less than 15 years old. Alio during January, several crit- ically injured victims of 1948 ac-ci- dents succumbed, bringing la.-t year's traffiv death toll up to 740. W'hile this wais slightly higher than in 1H47, it repiesents a reduction of r.ine percent in the death-rate in relation to the number of miles driv- en during the year. The fight ' came about when Roy Best resented a mauling given him when he went behind the Dundalk net. Very soon all the players on both teams were in the melee and the ice was littered with . pl;iying material , and players. When thing.s quieted down the referees came into the pic- I ture and gave two penalties to each Iteam. The entii-e fight was a dis- I grace, but could have been stopped at the beginning with efficient ref- ereeing. In the first period, on u rush on the Flesherton goal, Bradley and Turney collided and a two-inch cut was opened up on Bradley's fore- head, presumably by a skate, which rcQuiietl eiight stitches to close. In the third period Ernie Batcheloi itceived an injury to his nose when a puck was shot close in and the end -.f the stick struck him. The last period was faster, with Flesherton trying to prevent a shut- out a;id in their detennination to 1 keep the -Majors off the score sheet, i Dundalk took four jieiialties to one ' hy Flesherton. Both teams are now \ even, as Flesherton defeated Dun- I clalk 14-7 on their own ice.
