V A. 1 1 M A.V _. _ _ jl V. A J f . . ~ r RICE BOARD FACTS OF WARTIME INTEREST Q: Will the new ration books be mailed outT A: No. Distribution will be made on an 'over the counter* basis. Every- one will have to fill out and sign the postcard in the back of the present ok, but one person in a household may apply for all books used in his household. Each Local Ration Board will set up distributing centre* strategically located within Its own area, at which you may apply in person. Q: Is there any point in keeping the old ration book after I secure my new oneT A: Yes, indeed! Parent "Young man, what do you mean by kissing my daughter in that dark corner?" Young Visitor "Well, now that I see her out in the light, I wonder myself.'' Future Events Spare C coupon 9 but bad for the owner and bad for Canada. We are glad to see Mr. Hickling That promise will be kept, of ble to be out again, after being course, as Dominion of Canada fin- confined to his home for the past two ancial obligations have always been weeks with an attack of the "flu." kept, to the letter. But too many thoughtless owners of War Savings Certificates are asking Canada to give them back their cash now, without any good reason, except that they want to spend the money and at a time when the money is badly wanted to fight the Battle of Freedom. Every person who buys a Certifi- cate does a patriotic action, and at the same time gets himself a good investment and a cushion against post-war Iiard times. Every person who cashes a Certi- ficate unnecessarily, does an unpat- riotic action, cheats himself of part of its value, and weakens the shock absorber which may save him from nasty post war bumps. The Certificate for which you pay *4 now, is worth $6 if you keep it to maturity. If you cash it in after six months yon only get 4 for it net loss SI! Actually you lose more than that, because by spending your (4 at pre- sent high prices you get less value per dollar than you will when prices are back to normal. Farmers have learned alj about the differences in the purchasing power of money, by painful experience! Messrs. G. B. Welton and K. G. Betts attended the convention of the Municipal Electrical Association held in Toronto Tuesday and Wednesday. Misses Aileen and Loreen Johnson of Fergus spent the week end with their parents, Mr. and I.Irs. Wm. Johnson, Spring-hill. Mrs. Ed. Fisher is in Toronto at- tending the funeral of her nephew, Russell Brown, which is taking place this- Wednesday. Nancy and Mary Jane Mitchell of Thornbury have returned (to their hame, after spending 1 the past month at the home of Mr. F. H. W. Hickling. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Richards spent the week end at Lucknow. The for- mer returned by train Monday even- ing, while Mrs. Richards remained to spend the week there. Lieut. P. P. Anderson of Winnipeg spent the week end with his sister- in-law, Mrs. A. E. Gocssel, and fam- ily. Lieut. Anderson is on a recruit- ing campaign in this district. Mr. R. J. Boyd last week bought the residence owned by Mr. Alf. I Down, at the rear of the garage. On Monday they were busy moving, Mr. for the purchase of one half pound of butter comes due on March 1st and is valid until March 14. Q: Are the Local Ration Board chairmen aying salaries to the wo- men who volunteer to help with the distribution of ration book 2. A: No; women who volunteer for this job do so with the full under- standing that there is no salary at- tached. The job is being done to help their country's war effort. That is one reason why they are I Down taking the apartment vacated among the least offenders in this matter. Tho group which shares this honor with farmers is the finan- cial group,- -the men who each yeai buy the maximum amount of War Savings Certificates allowed by the regulations. The financiers to whom one-tenth of one per cent means a lot of money, who understand the value of money and interest in terms of what it is really worth, hang 0:1 to their War Savings Certificates like irrim death! It is the best paying thing they can find in Canadian war investments. It is so good, in fact, that in order to prevent them buying huge amounts of War Savings Certificates instead of Victory Bonds, the Government limits their purchases to 8480 per head, per year.
