T. Hill & Co., Ltd. MARKDALE, Ont. $m^»<^«^:«^<«<«<h;«<#<m>«>«>^<^<m^<mSi<« ^^4^ ItOMANTIC STORY ABOUT FRIED CHICKEN Poultry, according to Mons. Thomas chef at a well known Montreal hotel provides one of the dishes most pleas- ing to the general taste and at least one recipe is surrounded by romance. This is the origin of fried chicken as told in the legion of "Poulet a la Mar- engo." On June 14, 1800, 139 Vears ago, Napoleon Bonaparte in one of his lightning strokes defeated the Austrians at Marengo, and in celebra- tion of his victory invited his leading generals to dinner that evening. Unfortunately the field kitchen had been unable to keep pace with the rapid advance, although Napoleon's chef, Dunant, had pressed forward in a light van. The van, however was not provisioned and Dunant was faced with an almost unsurmountable pro- blem. Napoleon had said dinner, and dinner there would have to be. Dun- ant spied a farm house in the distance and at once dispatched two battle- scarred veterans of Napoleon's escort to see what they could find. The old soldiers were hard put to it but they managed to outflank two wandering chickens and gather a few tomatoes and a bunch of garlic. With these materials, Napoleon's chef had to up- hold his reputation and comply with the imperial order. The chickens were hastily killed, plucked, and cut into pieces. Mean- while was being heated in a pan on an improvised stove, and in no time the pieces of chicken were browning and .simmering. With a few drops of cognac sprinkled on t^p the pieces of chicken, the dinner was served and highly praised by Napoleon and his staff. Thus was instituted, "Poulet a la Marengo" or fried chicken. The bright young thing came into room and smiled at her mother. "Mother.", she said,, "I must hav« some money for a new dress. Will you ask daddy for it?" "Ask him yourself dear," was her mother's reply. "You are getting mar- ried in a month's time and you must have some practice." COLLECTIONS A schoolboy was told to write aa essay of 100 words on "Motorin*." He wrote: "We went out in our ear the other day. The car broke down. The other eighty-seven words are what dad said." NOW ip the time to clean op those bothersome accounts. Send your list to a firm of 50 years' experience. You pay us for results only. Send in your list on our NO COL- LECTION-NO CHARGE basis.
