Locals Lose Opener Markdale defeated Flesherton by a 16-4 score Monday evening in Mark- dale at the opening of the Holland League schedule. Flesherton, being their first year in the league, showed lack of practice as the whole game was marred beautifully with errors by each and every player. Flesher- ton counted their runs in the first and sixth innings while Markdale ad- ded a few runs each inning except the second. A good sized crowd of fans witnessed the game. Flesher- ton's next game is with Holland Cent- re in Flesherton on June 6th. Games are to be played in the fair grounds and not at the high school as form- erly announced. Markdale _ L. A newspaper can show what the people want to see. A newspaper can be bought more cheaply than a radio. The men who contribute to make a news- paper are very intelligent, quick and always on the job. A newspaper reflects these human characteristics. The men who make radios are not able ta impart to their product any- thing of themselves. A me: chant would be better to put an advertisement in a newspaper be- cause more people subscribe to the newspaper than possess radios. People who have radios usually sub- : cribf to a paper as well. Thus a rau.o advertisement would not reach the greatest possible number of people. GENERAL DRY GOODS I The reduction of membership in the Legislature from ninety to seventy, announced some months ago by Prem- ier Hepburn, will directly affect this riding as South Grey is at present close to the minimum in populatioK. With fewer members, one constituency in this district is almost certain to U â- abolished, as was the case in the Dominion redistribution when Bruce was given only one member and the south-east comer of the county ad- ded in with South Grey as Grey- Bruce. Whether the new territory to be added to the present South Grey will be from Dufferin, North Welling- ton or Bruce is not known as yet but We believe the government would be well advised to include the portion of Bruce now in this riding for Do- minion purposes, making the riding similar in both houses. â€" Durham Review. The bird, a cross â- ^ I between an eagle and a falcon, meas- ' ured in wing spread five feet seven j^ I inchs. This is not considered a large }*v , specimen, but promises to be a fine exhibit when stuffed, it being now in Meaford for that purpose. The duck hawk, killed above, had its nest on a ledge about ninety feet up a rock cliff. Its youthful dispatcher, to reach the bird, had to navigate a perilously narrow ledge before he took aim. The hawk had been accused of stealing chickens and consequently little sympathy is being felt over the shooting by the Relwing folk in gen- eral. It is estimated that there is one pair of duck hawks for every fifty thousand square miles. Small Ad. Column FOR SALE _ Or will exchange for cattle or pigs, good work horse. â€" F. Clearing, pr. $1*88 All illustration of the unfair and unreasonable, if not un-British prac- tice of Ontario courts, occurred in the police court here on Monday. A man named Duggan was fined $20 and costs for assaulting his father. When he came to settle he found the costs amounted to $26.20, or a little more than 25 per cent of his original sin. For this the Bench is not responsible, although it might, at times, ease the costs in the sys- tem. Again let it be said that a fine should be a fine and nothing more. The court oflficials are all well paid and being supposed to be bodies su- perior to the ordinary person who appears before them as a rlolator, why should the sinners or the offend- ers be doubly soaked to pay salaries and other expenses. Magristratea could do a lot worse than move to- ward the elimination of the so term- ed costs. In the case in point Dugrssn was fined for assaulting hia father. De- spite the fact that the pater sought a withdrawal of the charge, the court evidently thought that a lesson might have a good effect and it may. â€" Collingwood Ewâ€" B.
