Wednesday, February 23, 1938 THE FLESHERTON ADVANCE Ceylon Beat Proton C'ylon proved themselves worthy of entering the finals with Dundalk when they defeated Proton by a 3-2 BCore on Friday night. Last Tuesday nifirht the same two teams had buttled to a 1-1 tie in Dundalk. In this two Were left uncovered and Ilughie drove his brother's pass high into the twine. Proton went in front when White, parked in front of the net (this observ- er would say in the crease) took a pa.ss from McCannell and scored. Marshall got another penalty when his stick accidently slipped out of his hand and Teeter followed him for boarding. Thus for the second time game series goals were to count and Ceylon came from behind to tie the *" ^^"^ »f""^*' C*'^'"" ^^'â- â€¢-' '^" "'^n score in the second and get the most "h"'"' ^'"' *^<' ''''f^nsive work of Muir important counter in the third. The first period saw no less than six penalties given by Referee Boyd who handled the game nicely for no off-sides or rough stuff missed his eye. Hodgins drew the first penalty when he fell on the puck to avert a foal in the early minutes. The Cey- day. H. Sims got the gate for tripp ing and the Clippers pressed hard, finally scoring when Marshall's shot \vent back of the net and came out to Archibald who banged it home. Cey- lon was given a great hand by the crowd for securing the tying goal. Roth teams worked hard in the fin- al session but Ceylon had the better of the play and were rewarded when PHOTON â€" Goal, Blackbura; de- fence, Hodgins, Ray While; centre, P. Sims; wings, H. Teeter and McCann- ell started roughing it up behind the Ceylon net so they were given a few minutes in which to cool off. E. Marshall drew Ceylon's sec- ond penalty but was followed shortly by Hodgins for tripping. The period ended Ceylon 1, Proton 0. Proton tied it np early in the sec- ond stanza when both P. and H. Sims theatenerd to use his fi.sts on Teeter when the latter got his stick hooked around the Proton player but Boyd again solved the problem when he ushered both into tlie cooler. Stuart made some sensational stoyis in the closing moments, but no loss sensa- tional than tho.se by Blackburn when Ceylon, despite their one goal lead, ganged in to build up a larger total. The game ended 3-2 for Ceylon who play off with Dandulk for that batt- ered mug, the McDougall Trophy. Shel- burne shoved in three goals in the second period for a lead of five on the round. Flesherton came back strong in the last period to count twice, mak- ing the score at that time 3-2 for Shelburne. The goals were scored by Boyd and Smith. Throwing caution to the winds a ganging attack with every man foi-ward was attempted to score some goals, but Shelburne took advantage of quick breaks on these plays and notched four fast ones past Ferris to make sure of the game and a place in the final games. Very few fans accompanied the team to the south, owing to the icy condition of the highway. In fact the cars making the trip with the play- ers took some two hours to reach home following the game. Two Markdale rinks, L. Thibaudoau and P. Sims met in the final game of the second event, the Thibaudeau rink coming out ahead 11 to 4. In the semi-final round P. Sims won 11-5 from C. Walker of Clarks- burg, while Thibaudeau defeated W. Braithwaite of Meaford 9-8. Perfect weather was enjoyed by the curlers during the two-day event. Eighteen rinks took part in the bonspiel from Shelbui-ne, Durham, Markdale, Chats- worth, Owen Sound, Meaford and Clarksburg. The following local rinks took part- in the bonspiel: G. R. Service T. Welton skip Dun<ialk took Markdale into camp Monday night by the score of 3-2 and will now meet Shelburne in the League finals. Who will be the ul- timate winner is hard to say, but we think that Dundalk will have an ex- cellent chance. The office dog, says that this is Shelburne's year, as two years ago Chatsworth were League champions, last year coming to Flesherton, 22 miles south and this year Shelburne is the logical winner as they are 22 miles south of Flesh- erton. Next week will sec whether or not he is correct. Total milk production in Canada has shown a steady increase for the past nine years. During the five- year period 1932-30, milk production increased from approximately 15,900- 000,000 lbs. in 1932 to over 16 billion pounds in 1936. and a further ad- vance of approximately 200 million pounds is indicated for 1937. Dundalk counted two fast goals before Teeter tallied for Cey- lon. The Dundalk forwards were continually left uncovered and Moody rapped in the third goal. E. Plester got in the clear and was tripped, but no penalty was given. This was one of the many unfair deals the Ceylon lads got. Dundalk scored again early in the second and right after B. Plester drew a penalty for tripping. I^ng- don tried to steal a free ride on Marshall's back and also got a pen- alty. B. Plester and Moody squared up to each other but the referee was on the job before they got swinging. Dundalk scored .twice in the third and when Marshall mentioned that he didn't think much of the refereeing be also got the gate. Ceylon played every man up and Stuart did well to keep the puck out of the twine as Langdon, Wcdlwood and Moody were in repeatedly. The next game is in Dundalk on Thursday night.
