Wednesday, June 9, 1937 THE FLESHERTON ADVANCE Owen Sound Alderman 'Slaps' South Grey CEYLON Reporting a m(M>tlng of the Owen 8»)Hnd City Council held on Friday ftToning the Sun-TlnK* of Saturday Klves tho {ollowing in'tereetlng In- formation. "A deputation from the City Coun- cil will go to Toronto to protest to the PepHrtment of HiBhways that OwAn Sound men arc not l><»lng given ©mploynipnt on the hlKhway con- Btructlon work at Berkeley, the City Fathers decided Friday evening. "Aid. Ja«. Rutherford, chairman of the llelieff Committee, stated that, out of 70 men employed on this Job, there were only four Owon Sounders, only two of whom had heen taken from the relieif li(»t of this city. The work waa beiag given to farmer'e sons, who never we>re on relief, he claimed. " "We should «et a/t least 50 per cent of the labor,' Aid. Rutherford declared. 'This work is being under- tAken by the Government to aid the relief sttuation. but we are getting BO help from It. I think some stop should be put to the patronage plan o< g;lTlng out the work. I would BugRe.8t «hat we go to Toronto and present our case.' "Admitting that the work was In the South Orey riding. Aid. Ruther- ford declared "Most of our big fami- lies on relief have been from South Grey. If the South Orey municipal- Itiee would care to take them back, then we would not kick so much.' "Aid. H. Mason, chairman last year, stated that a similar situation had arisen when he was chairman, but had been quickly overcome when he went to Toronto about it." Mr. Clarence Marshall, Toronto, was a visitor over the week end at his home here. Miss Mclnni.s was in Owen Sound the latter part of the week. Mr. and Mr.s. Richardson, Markdale, were visitors last week with the lat- ter's .sister, Mrs. T. Irwin. Mr. F. D. Cairns, Mr. George Snell, accompanied by ML-^ses Margaret and Jean Collinson spent Sunday in To- ronto. Mrs. D. Macphail, accompanied by Miss Apnes Macphail M.P.,left la.st Tuesday for Ottawa where Mrs. Mac- j phail will consult with a specialist. I Week end and Sunday vi-sitors with } Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Cairns were: Mr. I and Mis. Wilfred Burnside, Markdale, I Mr. and Mrs. Elson Cardiff, Brussek, I Mrs. Joe McMullcn, Mr. Will. Hemp- { hill, Toronto, Mr. and Mrs. McDonald and Isabel and Miss Beesie Cairns of Weston. Miss Mary Muir and Miss Katie Wilson, Toronto, spent Thursday at the home of Mr, A. S. Muir. Mrs. Jas. Knox returned the latter part of the week after a visit in To- ronto and Bowmanville. She was accompanied home by Mr. and Mrs. Alex. Knox and babe, Toronto, who spent the week end here. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Piper visited in Markdale on Sunday. Mrs. Clias. Irish and son, Norman, Toronto, spent the week end with her father, Mr. Sanirster Hemphill and Miss Maud. Miss Mildred Risk visited her sis- ter, Mrs. Elwood Stevens on Sunday. Mrs. Archie Sinclair spent several day.s last week in the city. Mr. A. S. Muir visited his mother in Toronto last week. We were not aware that the work was being undertaken by the Gov- ernment to aid the relief situation, until the announcement was made by the Owen Sound Alderman. We understood the pavement was being cons.trurt(»d in order to make im- prove^J roads for tho motorists. Then H Is al«o news to find that "most of our bijf families on relief have come from South Orey." Th»t. coming from a man who le supposcMl to be big enough and broad enough to be a city alderman makes South Grey residents wonder whether Owen Sound is the whole works or Just an Isolated municipality adjoining the County of Grey. It is not surprising the feeling is growing among the County Councillors that the County's headquarters should be moved to some centre within the county Markdale Standard. A t.rncher'8 job nowadays is often complicated by the fact that he must make the children unlearn a lot of things he picks up on the street and at home. ****i iROOFINGi BRANTFORD ASPHALT ROOFING i!
