At the January session of County council, Sheriff Broese annouri'ed to the member? that the books, which they had ordered were now ready for delivery and each member could receive his copy at the Sheriff's office. As a result of this announcement 'only two copies' of the book were sold! This naturally caus- ed more "depression" among those uho had worked so hard to produce the book. A most Asked Wrong Question An incident occurred at the luncheon given the visiting brethren of the press by the Beauharnois Construction To., that was the cause of much mirth. \Vhen thc visitors entered the staft dining room where the luncheon was given, a number of men were seated at the tables partaking of their lunch Talk died down for a moment and in The First of May come? on Sun- order to start it again one of the day this year. What a temptation' visiting editors casually enquired of that is going to present to some fish-' another as to what kind of a man was Sweezy, the main man behind the Beauharnois power development and on account of thc talk in connection with the works in question, furthei enquired as to what kind of horns he wore. Silence again reigned for n moment and then one of those who had Ix.-en at the table casually stated, "I am Sweezy!" Needless to state the matter was dropped at once, and Bro. This "common carrier" will in future be known as the Canadian Pacific Ex- press Company. There seems no doubt that the pro- posed waterways convention between Canada and the United States will be postponed for another year. The (Dominion parliamentary 'session fs rushing to its end and all such ques- tions will Ix- thrown to one side foi at least another year. It is one of the greatest cosmopolitan cities in the world, with both French and English languages being spoken French being predominant. Midway on the island loams up a mountain, called Mount Royal, 700 feet high, on top of which is a fine park in which a motor vehicle is not allowed to run. This mountain can be seen for man> miles before the traveller reaches thi city. On its southern side many fine residences have been erected with a fine view of the St. Lawrence and also of the Adirondack mountains, 70 miles away. The older portions of Montreal pre- serve many architectural and civic characteristics of its earlier years while in the surrounding countryside are found a simplicity of life and a survival of quaint institutions and customs recalling the seventeenth century, Brittany and Normandy, where came the ancestors of the French-Canadian habitants of today. The roads in Quebec are winding and very narrow, but many Jmiles are paved and others are of good grave) construction. Montreal boasts of a fine ocean harbor 1000 miles from the sea, which 100 large ocean-going boats can dock at one time. When we were there only two boats were in, the Montclare and a freighter, both own- ed by the C. P. R. There are 10 miles of dock with large grain eleva- tors, from which is shipped most ol the grain from Canada, and large warehouses and cold storage plants. The works un !., at thc present time will 500,000 h. p. of electricity energy, the first unit of which will be ready by October 1, 1J>,'!2. Besides the power canal a ship chan- nel 600 feet wide and 27 feet deep is being dredged at thc present time at one side of the canal. This is being built at a cost of $1(5,000,000 and will be turned over to thc Domin- ion government at no cost. To allow the freighters to enter at the east end, where the power house is situat- ed, thc government will be obliged to construct two locks with a toal lift of 80 feet, the boats running through thc canal to Lake St. Francis. The manner of excavating the ship channel is very interesting. An electric hydraulic dredge can cut intt the earth at tho rate of 1,100 cubic yards an hour and moves forward n-, much as 210 yards in a day. It has i-xcavated 819,000 cubic yards in one month. The cutter head is seven feet in diameter and is operated by n 200 h. p. motor, and the earth, it is worked through is pu-nped into a settling basin by a 2,200 h. p. motor There was one spot where this dredge i-ould not operate successfully and this was clay in whyh were hugi boulders that could not go through the pipes. However a boulder 18 inches in diameter can go through tin ilrodgo and pipe line. Two railway lines cross the canal n ml bridges have had to bp construct- ed by the Company for them and at the present time seem strange as there is no water visible that would cause a bridge to be built. One other interesting feature was the manner of thc excavating of thc main canal. Two huge derricks were erected on both sides of the canal from which were strung cables carry ing a gooop of four cubic yards ca- narity that scraped the earth on both sirV>s, the material being placed on both sides of the canal, forming; dykes. These dykes are rip-rapped with stone to prevent erosion of the banks. The building of this huge powoi development is a tribute to the belief in the great future of this country. While there Im been considerable talk on tho finnn.'inir and other views, f v of Groy. of this great work it remain! as thej April 25h. 1932. I IK STKAI DRINK.
