THURSTON. • Editor An Entire New Ford | Car Design Announceil OUR 47TH YEAR COMMENCES With this isaue The Advance com- nences its forty-seventh year of pub- lication and usefulness and the ending iS. the thirty-ninth under the leader- ship of the present editor. Our trials •nd tribulations have been many dur- fns that period but we look forward to A large and better village and a more inogressive district. Right here we have some of the best farming dis- tricts in Ontario and the future holds ^eat possibilities for expansion and progress. THE TIME FOR CHARITY To be charitable in one's will xi in a sense to eat one's cake and have it too. There is the pleasurable 8«nsa- tion of beneficence without the pain <tf physical parting. It is uaually for- gotten that to be charitable at death is the fact to be charitable with other people's money since no method has yet been devised of transporting wealth beyond the grave. What is surprising after such bequests ij the sense of moral superioroty they seem to give to those who make them. It is hard to see that virtuous quality there can be in a gift which is not to take effect until after one is dead, and although o^ie'a conteimpforaries may give one the benefit of a repu- tation for generosity, it seems unwise to expect the Recording Angel to be similarly misled. Nor can any virtue be said to attach to those to whom the sum so left might otherwise have gone. They have had no share in the gift and have not the option of preventing it. On .A;he whole, it "Would seem a wiser course to foster, If possible, a charitable inclination in •one's children, and leave to them both the money and the credit for using " moVo^i^ed it charitably. â€" Saturday Night. A new Ford car of extensively re- , vised design was announced Monday , in an official statement issued by W. R. Campl>ell, Vice-President and Treasurer of the Ford Motor Comp- any of Canada, Limited. 'â-  ''Production of a new Ford car, superior to any now available in the low priced light car field, will shortly be started by this Company. The model T Ford, which for twen- ty years has been the leader in the automotive industry will continue to be a substantial factor in produc- tion in view qf the fact that all model T cars now in service will for many years require replacement parts." Information as to the date on which production of the new model Ford will begin was not forthcoming. But it was indicated thai the work of swinging over the huge Ford factory will immediately be initiated. This work will necessitate the replacing nad rearrangement of thousands of machines and will entail an enormous expenditure of money and labor, but it is said that plans for its execution havu been thoroughly developed and that the work will proceed with great celerity. The new Ford car, it was learned, has been designed by Henry Ford, who also designed the famous model T and its predecessors and is the product of many years of engin- eering research. The present car was one of the largest factors in creating the (conditions which now make the new model Ford possible. The world wide influence of tie Ford in the building of good roads and in teaching the people the use and val- ue of mechanical power is conceded. Nowadays everybody runs some kind of motor power, but twenty years ago when the model T was introduced, only the adventurous few could be in- drced to use an automobile. It had a harder time winning public confi- dence than the aeroplane has now. The model T was the great educator in this respect. It was the car that ran before there were good roads to run upon. It broke down the barr- iers of distance in rural sections, brought people of those sections clos- er together, and placed education within the reach of everyone. It is still the pioneer in many parts of the I world which are just beginning to be But conditions in Canada Nsw Regulations for Motor Drivers The new regulations for drivers of motor cars, which it is expcted will come into force about July, should help in some measure to obviate the dangers from inexperienced motor- ists driving cars. It is stated by Hon. Mr. Henry that when the per- mit law comes into force any person who has driven a car for six months will be eligible to receive a permit without examination. Any person who cannot thus qualify, however, will be required to pass a government examination of his fitness to be behind a steering wheel. New car purcltasers ers will also require to be examied un- less they have previously owned mach- ines and can thus qualify under the six months' rule. The fee for the permits has not been determined upon, but it probably will be 60c or fl.OO. The permits are not to be a source of revenue for the Government, but a means of control, and persons found guilty of recklessness in operating their machines will be liable to have their permits suspended or cancelled. when the young plant has grown a few inches the pot be broken and the contents placed in the earth. â€" Meaford Mirror. MAKING THE TOWN PAY PLANT A THEE ON JULY 1 EDITORIAL NOTES We agree with the Chicago syndi- cate that women are wonderful creatures. This summer they will ke^ cool in the same skimpy clothes iXat kept them warm this winter. • • • WTiat about next year's coal sup- ply? Are we to get it from the Al- berta mines, or will the railway com- mission beign before the cold days return to reach a conclusion on the railway rates. The commission is the greatest body extant; it moves slower than a snail at a gallop. * • * When the girls of from 21 to 30 get votes in Great Britain at the next election it will no longer be true that â- "Britannia rules the wives." and in the United States have so great ly changed'that further refinement in motor car construction is now desirable and the new model is a recognition of this. With the new car the Ford interests will continue in the light car field, which they created, on the same basis of quantity production, giving high quality, low price and constant service. For this new model is claimed speed, style, tflexibility and control in traffic. In quality and in price it promises to be a notable con- tribution to the motor world. It is understood that it will cost more to manufacture than the present model T, but that it will be more economical to operate. Ottawa authorities want all muni- cipalities to plant a maple tree at some central point on July 1. Tho Suggestion is good. Eyery town should plant maple trees not' only this first of July but every year. During the last few years there has been a lot of attention to reforestry. Last week at Hanover thousands of pine trees were planted around the little lake frou which that town gets it's water supply. It will be a municipal forest. Port Elgin has also started a pine plantation on one of its parks which previously was a grass com- mons. Various counties hav started reforestration on a large scale on land which' is unfit for agricultural purposes. There woul be more sure work if people could see an immediate return but most men in planting trees are planting for some one else. The pay is the satisfaction of knowing that you are doing some good for somebody else and after all that is good payment. For Canadian planting it is 'sug- gested that seeds be now placed in pots, and that on the day of jubilee. We notice that mr.ny of the papers â€" and hear a goo.l many people â€" complaining about the recent raise in the box rents at the post office. It has been pointed out that the people of the towns seem to be the victims while the favors are given to their rural and city neighbors. The man in town not only has to go to the post office for his letters, but he has to pay for the privilege. At the the same time the farmer living just across the townline gets his mail delivered at his front gate at a box which does not cost him any rent and which was practically given to him in the first place. Often he doesnt appreciate it enough to keep his name painted on it. Similarly the city d^^eller gets his mail drop- ped in his front door. We do not believe that a delivery of letters would be justified but it does seem that the towns are being made the goat. â€" Fergus News Record. EXTERMINATING GROUND HOGS A Mulmur farmer has conceived and Buciffssfully carried out a method to destroy ground hogs that not only has merit and has proven to be the moat efficient, but is one of the sim- plest means yet made known to acc- omplish this purpose. This man aim- ply puts a piece of hose over the exit of the exhaust of an old Ford car and starts for the field. Running the end of the hose a few feet into the hole made by the ground hog, the engine of the car is allowed to run for a minute or two. Withdraw the hose, fill up the hole and^ level off the earth around. Mr. Ground Hog will never make any attempt to come out as he has ceased to live. It never failed yet, says the Mulmur farmer. A Chicago husband, shot by his wife, says he had been expecting it for 11 years. Sangninity rewarded. De Laval Cream Separator There are some strange people in the world. One man gets behind a year or so with his subscription and then he decides to pay up and he adds a couple of dollars extra to hrs cheque to pay for a year in advance. Another will accept the paper for three or four years without consider- ing payment and then when we insist on a reckoning will consider he is being harshlr dealt with and abuse The Editor in good style. If this class would only play fair they would see that it would be nothing but right to double the amount of their remit- tance. If the Editor has carried them three years without pay they in turn should pay for their paper three years in advance to even matters up. Probably there is no business in Can- ada today that is being run with so little margin of profits as the weekly newspaper business and when a few customers who have been accommoda- ted by The Editor refuse to pay up it reduces the margin of profits to the vanrshing point. After the first of June when a man says he was detained by a blow out you'll have to ask him what he means. Henry Ford says he is against borrowing or lending. But of course London Punch suggests that the "^""^ speaks from the heights. best place to affix safety first hints We're not so pernicktey.
