They went from Hanover through to Durham and ^thence to Dundalk via Holstein, ren>aining Thursday nifcht at Dundejtl^. On Friday morning they went into Os- prey township, and up to Eugenia, through the Beaver Valley to Thorn- bury, Clarksburg, Meaford and on over to Owen Sound. Reeve Pringle, who is chairman of the committee, stated that they found the roads generally in much better condition than for several years past. This they attributed to the remark- ably fine weather this spring, the road.^ having dried up quicker than usual, although there were several small sections, notably one just east of Clarksburg, where the road heav- ed a great deal by the action of the frost which is in good shape at the present time. '^ The three road construction outfits oelonging to the couhty have not been put into commission as yet this spring, but if the weather keeps good all of them will be in use about the middle orf May, which is somewhat earlier than uaual. They will start work where they left off last fall, in Ospreyl, Proton and Keppel town- ships. There will be no large bridges er- ected this year, at least the commit- tee have not seen any place where one is necessary. The bridge at Hanover, which was only nicely start- ed last year, will have to be finished, and it is more than likely that a new top will have to be put on it, although this has not been definitely decided. The bridges at Durham and Thorn- bury are completed with the excep- tion of the floors, which will be of concrete. Temporary plank floors were put dovim in them last fall, but with the frost menace eliminated the new concrete floors will be put down, in fact, a start has already been made in the case of tke Thombury bridge. There is apparently gold in Fer- WANTEDâ€" About 600 feet of one- gus. It has always been known as a f inch hardwood lumber. â€" John Wright. Scotch town, and what the citizens* Flesherton. have they hold. Last week Mr. Per-S r-nwT waxttbt. -a- x. ^ "T~x cy Campbell of Union street sold m..\JP^}' ^ ^?^,^J^^'«}'^^ '?».'''«* cy John Muir a bunch of his choice crate fattened chicks. Mr. Muir be- ing a dealer, sold some of them to Mr. Wm. Chapman, our butcher. Mrs. Chapman desiring a change from the regular bill of fare, decided to expropriate one of these choice chickd. While Mrs. Chapman was preparing the chicken, she found the gizzard lined with several bright substances. So strong a resemblance did they bear to gold that R. J. Ruth- erford, the jeweller, was consulted. Two of the small pieces he pronounc- ed as pure gold and the two others, resembling copper, were brass. The questions in the minds of the citizens now areâ€" Is there gold in that sec- tion or was the mineral in the feed and where was it produced? â€" Fergus News-Record. prices paid for live and dressed tf'owl. STUART. Fleaherton. Ont HYDRO BILLS ROUSE ALLISTON. Last week people of this town, says the Alliston Herald.received their light bills for the two months and the water bills for the first quarter accom- panied them. The amount involved has provoked an outcry against the enormous rate the Hydro charged for current in this town. One case is cited. The service charge item on one of the bills rendered in town last week is within 14c of the total bill for a month's current in a six room house in Toronto. In that city people living in houses of the same class as the average home in Allis- ton. get off with monthly light bUla of 91 and $1.60. while the average bill of an Alliatonian in a like house is 93 and $SJiO. And when it eomee to current for cooking, a 92 biU in Toronto is matched by a 94 in this town. The ayatem of charging ia eaid to be coat, and is declared to be eminently fair, became the eouree la a public uUlity. Yet Toronto, which naea a mUlion two-cent postage etamps to a hundred used in Allia- ton, does not get its *tampo any cheaper beeawae the poatal service ia a public utility. Thia frroii on- rairnese and persecution of the rural dweller by the imperionineaa of the cities will be righted some day and it is not impoasibic that the city dweller will pay for all the per- secution he haa heaped upon the ru' ral citiien.
