THURSTON. - Editor VANDELEUR GRKY COl NTY COOt) ROADS The quc^llon of Rood roads in (Jrey County has Iwen a live issue diir- injc the jyust ft-w years and so far, it has not been settled and will not like- ly be ffor .'^omi- time. Urban Munici- palities have been payinK into the County Treasury largo .--ums of money and have been receiving very little benefit in improved roads â€" u tfrant, the past couple of years, of only twenty five )>er cent being (jiven to the municipalities. There was a very glarinK ine(|uality in the ar- rangement and in order to assist the on a twenty foot strip of pavement urban di.^tricts, the Ontario Prov- incial government at the last se.-^sion passed an act allowing the town.-* and villages 100 per rent expenditures along the centre of the main street and any more width would be paid by thei municipality in question. We understand that the expenditure would be made l)y the Ontario gov- ernment and Grey County Council, each payiiiK half the cost of the pvements. Practically every town and village in Grey County made application for this grant at its last session of the County Council and naturally, with the huge debt already on tlic county, the proposition seemed Snadvisable to taiie up and ttie applications were turned down. Those in favor of building these pavements took their case to the Minister of Highways, Hon. Geo. S. Henry, and he requested a .special meeting of Grey County Council be held to re- consider the matter. The urban municipalities havc something; com- ing to them for the amount of money alreaady paid into the road construcc- tion in the county Ijut what can be done without saddling the county â- with a debt twice what it is at pres- ent is the iM-ildem that has not been settled yet.
