Linton Statistics just published by the American Newspaper Directory show there are 2,771 less weekly newspap- ers in the United States to-day than there were in 1917. The reason giv- en is that the increased publishing costs forced these thousands of pub- lishers to quit. The loss of the weekly newspaper to a town hastans the drift cityward and means the loss of the small community's best public- ity agent and trade puller.. District interests fall away to other centres and the town without a good paper is looked upon as a dead one. Every W2ek the local paper boosts the in-' terests of its citizens, its comnnmity j and its district, reflecting to the out- side woild its town is a live centre, a •food place to trade in and live in. Every loyal and enterprisihg citizen should be a subscriber to his home town papsr and share in the co-oper- ation to attract trade to his town by advertising through is columns. HILL & Co., Limited, Markdale A good crowd saw the slush-eating war maids canoe around the ice on Wednesday night last. Although the ice was bad the girls from Dundalk held the locals to a 1-1 scorj, thus' losing nothing in making the trip. Marie Patton scored for Flesherton in the first period. Dundalk netted theirs on a nice shot by Emma Wright and from that on no further scoring was done. Marie Patton was b.\st for the local girls, while Evelyn Watson starred for Dundalk.
