Wednesday. April 9th. 1924 THE FLESHERTON ADVANCE #â- THF. Flesherton Ad^arce W. H. THUKSTON, - Editor A PLEA FOR THK CKOW The DuPont jwwdcr company is offering prizes to tlioae wiio will snoot the laice.,t nu.rber of crows, with a view to exterminatinB our bind, friend. The compaiiy holds that the crow is an enemy to niani<ind â€" that he destroys wild hirds' nes.s, steals corn. etc. There are those who disagree en- tirely with this view, cluiminpr that j the crow does more Rood than harni.l and personally we hold to the latter | view. Wild birds have the instinct to hide iheir nests pretty well from ] the depredating crow and the number he discovers are few. Sometimes he will make an onslaught on the corn i patch, but the damage done in this ] way is not great. On the other hand ! he is a benefactor to the extent that he kills millionii of harmful in.sect.^ and is a general .scavanger of much merit. Along our lake shores espec- ially he cleans up a great deal of refuse and is always on the keen search for decaying animal matter. His cheery voice is ihe first bird voice heard on the approach of spr.ng. Really, spring would not be spring w''.hout the graucous notes o' Johnny Crow, and we would miss him Very much indeed. We hope the proposed campaign will not be successful in exterminat- ing his ebony majesty. For this year at least he is safe â€" he is established. Next fall when the crow conventions are on it might be well for them to wmm^ discuss ways and means of circum- venting the campaign, and probably this will be done. We feel like remarking, too, that crow ethics are quite as estimable as those of humanity as a whole. We have in our combination the corn thief and robbers of home nests, yet we have not yet come to the conclu- sion that humanity should be exterm- inated on this account. We do not even exterminate the robbers an* thieves, but shut them up and feed them â€" when we can catch them. While the.';e things go on ui the life of human l>eini;8 our sympathie ; go out to the crow aud we take olT our hats to his persistency in sustaining life under adver^e conditions and all campaigns that have ever been under- taken for his extermipat'on. TURNKI) A <;<)01) THING DOWN At a recent meeting of the high school board a propositi*^" â- •as placed before the members for the formation of an Agricultural department. The present^rincipal, Mr. Carroll, is prop- erly oualified to teach a department. But ihe proposition was turned down flatly by the board, by shelving the idea until the June meeting. The forming of this department would bring a possible grant of "ilOOO per year towards the salary of a teacher. . They refused to appoint an advisory committee that would entitle them to an extra grant of $G00, retroactive • from January 1st last, to cover the I work already done by the Principal. ; To entitle the Board to this $600 a committee was necessary and the i Board had power to dismiss it in June I if they decided to drop the idea of a department. This they refused to do and the $600 was lost to the town- .ship by their negligence in not ap- Accounts for Sale Northern Fidelity Exchange, Owen Sound (BROKERS OF COMMERCIAL ACCOUNTS) As agents offer the following judgments, notes and open accounts for sale to the highest bidder, reser\ing the right to reject any or all bids. The nny- ments would be made a year from this March and would embrace the 81000 grant jjIu* the $600 extra f ir the work done in the past few months. Now, if they do decide in June to have this department officially sanctioned as an Agricultural Department, this $600 grant will be lost to the Towushin and only the $1000 grant will be received towards next year's salary; $600 lost throu.i^h shortsightedness. We believe the Board made a big mistake, to put it mildly, in deciding as they did. We confess we don't understand how thyy can justify themeselves. EDITORIAL NOTES A Goderich man has ott'ered to do nate $12,000 towards a ntw town hall there. We would solicit a like sub- scription for one for Flesherton too. • • * • The heads of the Canadian National Railway are advocating the co-opera- tion of their employees as the key note to the success of the company in paying its way. Co-operation has made successes in the past and it still holds true. • * » * The Walkerton Telescope is again advocating an enclosed rink for the town, intsead of the open-air rinks which are now used, but states thai money cannot Jie secured by public sub.scription to back the propositioin If th^ citizens would form a rink company and issue shares for the am- ount, the difficujty might be solved. Flesherton's rink is being run by a rink company and they give first class service. ^ ® ® HOME By One of The Old Boys I HOME, THE PEOPLE Dare one write of the people of home ? Dare one attempt to write of the flesh-and-blood people that go to make up the village as it really is ? Commonplace as Home may look to the motoring tourist as he flies through town, with its knots of star- ing villagers, its people have their secrets that outsiders may not know. While all its citizens are satisfied with themselves â€" who is not â€" still he would be a brave soul who would for a mo.r.ent dare tell the truth of the Home folk. There are times when discretlo.i is the bettor part of vaior. And, too, who are there to say that this is truth and that is error ? Who will interpret the motive.-^ behind the act, and tell the TRUTH ? And who can tell the secret deeds of kindly people who hide their kindness behind a gruff exterior. Who is there to tell of the halting tear-brinimed words of the widow and little family, who on Thanksgiving evening found her way to a village home to thank the mother there for a basket of good thin<'s Iv cause "there isn't anybody else who would have thought of doing a thing like that," â€" but there was, if only they had slop- ped to think. The basket had been carefully left on hin- doorstop while no one was about; because, as mother said to her son in sendin" him out, "we have so much, and siic so little.'" Courage would be required to go up and down the street, and v.-rite the truth (if all the folk at homeâ€" and yet perhaps it would not be courate, liui- simply bad judgment and poor taste, after all. There are some things that one may not tell to strangers, though every soul at home might know of them. But !;ureiy one may wriie of some of the Home fol'K; carefully .•select that whicn will not wound, but picture for n while tiie (k'sh and blood of the villa 'p. Goodyear Tires ! We are pleased to advise that we have been ap- pointed the Goodyear Selected Dealer for Flesher- ton zuid surrounding district and have a complete line of these well-known tires on hand for you to choose from. If you can let us know your re- quirements early we can protect you against any rise in price. Car License. We are also pleased to advise that we have been fortunate in improving our service to car owners applying for license. We will now have a supply of license plates on hand and it will not be necessary for you to wait till they are sent for. BATTERIES Thefe seem to have been a large number of batteries in this district which appear to have passed the three score and ten and have lost the vieor they previously possessed. New batteries have dropped so in price since last fall that unless a battery has been in service but a short time, it really does not pay to have it overhauled. We have been appointed distributors for the MACK batterv one which has been thoroughly tested and proved it self second to none. The new prices on these batteries will surprise you. We can supply them in rubber cases at the same price as wooden cases and they are much superior. D. Very shortly after lie furnished this information he received word that on his mother's side he was one of the missing heirs to a fabulous p.state in Yorkshire, England, and askin"- him to forward $25 towards expenses in proving up. Fortunately he was ac- quainted with some of the famous Baker estate heirs, who have t)een paying out money in vain hopes for the past 50 years, and decided that he would hang on to the $25, and other twenty-fives to follow instead of let- ting himself be bled.
