Bus- iness men in town and neighboring: villages had varying sums on deposit in current accounts and also in sav- ings acounts. One man in Alliston told The Herald of having $500 in current account and several in sav- ings, a principal of a mortgage which he held, having been recently paid. Saturday morning he found himself needing money badly and was unable to Becure a dollar of what belonged to him. A load sliped off his mind when the manager of the Bank of Montreal stepped unsolicited and informed him that if he had been hit the Bank of Montreal would be glad to help him out. In several cases an offer of this kind from Mr. W. C. Grandy of the Bank of Montreal was a veritable letter from home with money in it. In the Home Bank here is money be- longing to private individuals, to cor- porate bodies, to estates, churches, societies and businesses. A retired farmer in town told the Herald of his predicament. He had all the money he owned in the Home Bank and was in the habit of going jn Saturday morning to draw out a little to keep him going for a week. Now he can- not draw a cent and has no interest coming in for some months. A widow in town is in the same circumstances. All her ready money is in the Home Bank and no interest payments are due her until next March Among the estate money locked up is the whole of the proceeds of the Rooney estate amounting to $25,000. The proceeds of the McCarroll estate so far as realized are also a temporary prisoner in the Bank which has closed its doors. The Presbyterian church and all the auxiliary societies of that church kept their accounts there and the Women's Institute also had the money they were using to finance their library building in there. The town account and acounts of the pub- lic utility commission were also there, but there was little money to their credit. The taxes and payments on waterworks being a few weeks dis- tant the accounts were overdrawn and when the Home Bank closed its doors Monday the town and the com- mission made arrangements with the Bunk of Montreal to carry 0:1. The school building committee had a bal- ance of $-1,200 lying inthe Home Bank and payments for the painting and other work in collection with finishing up the building coming due. Last Saturday the Women's Institute had no money to pay the workmen who had been engaged all week on the library. Instnr.ei-s of what effect the Bank's suspension has had could be made to string over a couple columns but these few will convoy a vague idea of what !i bank failure means to th'.> I'eneral public. Going stone blind with the glare from the Walkerton Klectric Light Co '. product, the bat, like the proverbial elephant in a china shop, bumped into everything about the place, and soon had the latherists and whisker-grow- ers swinging like a garden gate after it. For a time it looked a.s if the shop would be wrecked in the excitement and everyone viewing the scene and not knowing the reason brooms were swaying in the air, might be pardon- ed for suspecting that a small-sized riot was being staged and that anoth- er peace conference was badly needed. That Walkerton isn't exactly full of Babe Ruths who can hit whatever they swing at was evidenced by the large number of misses on Saturday night. In fact it looked as if the bat would die of old agf, so poor \va.- ihi 1 I batting average IK coming.
