Ont. \ RAKE GimETE TILE Well Cured and Properly Made Cement Tile Equal to Clay. BtraoRles, an Infections Disease of Colts iiiti}/ Be OontroUed â€" The Cause, Symptonis and Treatment of This Serious Disease. (Contributed by Ontario Department ot Agriculture, Toronto.) TO make concrete tile satis- factorily many things must be taken Into consideration. In the first place it is very iiecesstiry that the manufacturer have experience In the making of concrete lile; besides, It i.s essential to have good strong machinery, a good qual- ity of sand and gravel, or crushed rock, first-class cement, material and cement thoroughly mixed, and a kiln where the tile may be .steam cured. Only strong, heavy and durable machinery should be used. With respect to material a good aggregate would be one part material, â- which would pass through a twenty-mesh sieve, and two parts, which would range from the previous size men- tioned up to one-quarter inch stone. Only good sharp material should be used â€" one in which there. is clay should be avoided. If this cannot be procured a sand washing machine will have to be added to the equip- ment of the plant. Where a great many tile manufac- turers make a mistake in the making of concrete tile is in the fact that they use too "lean" a mixture, that is not enough cement to the material. The proper mixture for first-class lile Is one part cement to 2 % parts of crushed material, and in no case should the mix be more lean than one to three of a total aggregate, sufficient water being added to the mixture to make a gum consistency. When the tile are completed they should be placed in kilns where they may be steam cured and left there for a period of not less than 4S hours. The kiln should be about six feet in height and of a width sufficient to allow the roquiied number of trucks on which the tile have been placed to rest during the curing process. The tile should be placed in the kiln not more than IVi hours aft'.-r It has been manufactured and kept (hero for 48 hours during the steaming process. After it has been cured it riiight be removed from the kiln and plied in the yard, and should have at least two weeks hard- ening before being again disturbed. Before the product of any tile plant is offered for sale samples should be tested either at the plant or sent to the Tlrainage Department at the O. ^. C, Ciiielpli, to be tested to see if it Is of the proper strength. â€" W. R. Scott, B.S.A., O. A. Collego, Ouelph. Strangles â€" Its Cause and Cure. Strangles, commonly called "Colt Distemper," is an infectious, febrile, orruplive disease peculiar to horses, especially to coUs or quite young horses, but tho.^e of all ages are li- able to suffer. One attack does not render an animal immune from a second, but I here are few cases in which an animal suffer.s tho second time. ^ The disease appears in. two forms, known as (a) Kegular Strangles, (b) Irregular Strangles, often called "Bastard Strangles." As with all contagious or infectious diseases it is caused by a specific virua which is communicablo from animal to ani- mal by contact or surroundinKs, may be carried from a diseased to a healthy aulmal on tho hands or clothra ot the attendant, on pails, forks, harness, clothing, etc., and it is possible it may be carried consider- able dista^jces in the air. Symptoms â€" When the abscesses form In llio spaco between the arms of the lower jaw (called tho maxil- lary space) the general health is often BO liltlo affected that nothing wrong is .suspected ur^til the abscesses break, but In most cases there is a dullness, iiioio or less loa.s of apiie- tlto, increase ot temperature, nasal discharge, at first watery, but soon beconiing purulent, cough, often dif- ticuUy in swallowing. A tumor or tumors fiui bo felt, and generally seen in tlie neighborhood of the head, usually in the space already referred to in the throat or higher up, just posterior to the lower jaw. In severe case.s the patient becomes unable to swallow, tho coush becomes very painful and brtathing more or less labored atld ditUcuU; and he usually stands with his noso iirolruded, fac- ing a supply of fresh air if at liberty. Treatment. â€" In mild eases good care and comfortable quarters are all that is needed, oUier than flushing out the cavities ot the abscesses three times daily Willi a live per cent, solu- tion ot one of tho coal tar antlscoptlcs or carbolic acid, in more acute cases in addition to the above it is good practice to steam Ihe nostrils occa- sionally by holdiUK the patient's head in steam escaping from u pot ot boil- ing water, to which has been added a little carbolic acid. Feed and water out of a high numger, as ho swallows with greater ease when head is ele- vated. Oive the patient two to four drams of hyposulphite of soda (uc- Cordin,£! lo size) ihveo limes dally. Keep hot poultices to tho throat, lance abscesses as soon as ready and treat as abovo. Feed on .soft, easily swallowed and easily digested food. If he wont eat keep up hia strength by giving new milk and raw egga with an oj, of sweet spirits ef nitre several times dully. Do not attempt to drench him. Olve the powders out of a spool, placing them well back on the tongue. Ulve Iho liquids with a 2-oii. syringo. It there bo danger of BuCfocation, and the uiuatcur can- not relievo it, a veterinarian should be sent for promptly. la cases of irrl- gular straufflJs the same treatment, less tlio UkuI lUtontlon to the foim- jng abscesses is iill that nn amateur, and, r.fler all, tbat a vcierinarlan can do.
