L Sharp, M V Simmons, East Orev fall fair, held on Monday, was the most most successful from point of exhibits that we have had for some years, but the crowd was small. Of course the weather was very cold and it snowed, but still the crowd should have been larger if the public took the deep interest in their home fair th^t they should and that they do in other places. The hall was well lilted with grain, roots, vegetables, fruit, (lowers, ladiea' work and dairy products. The compe- tition in butter was keener than we have ever seen it here. Outside cattle, horses, sheep and pigs were also good as also was the poultry. Mr. J. (} Mercer of Markdale, a specialist in white 'dottes and white ieghorns, took a large number of prizes for his Hne birds. The judge remarked that this exhibitor evidently knows a good bird. The show was nude very interescinn through Mr. Mercer's oontribution thereto. He has stock for sale. The poultry judge this year was Mr. R. B. Ko.\ of Toronto, who is also a breeder of white wyandottes, and who ovidonllyjknows'his business from A to Z. We consider him I he best all round man on poultry that we' have had here. The Mt. Forest pipe band furiished music and many were the coir.plimeiitaiy wmarks we heard passed on their playing. Flesherton will be pleased to have a return engagement with these gentlemen at some future time. The concert at night was a successful att'uir and the entertainment was a good one. Reciipt3 at the ga*e were ilW and at the concert $l.'t2. The prize list will appear next week. KARSTEDT FLESHERTON, ONTARIO. » 1 ii^ Canadians in Flying Corps Ottawa, Oct 8â€" Recent sptctneulsr feats of Major Bishop, the Canadian j aviator who has won all the medals for I valor available in the British army, has | called attention strikincly to thit manner in which young Canadians have taken to the new manner oi tigbtiog in the aii. Canada has .sent to the war some of Ihn finest air tighleis developed in recent years. The services take only men under 25 years of age to train a? pilots. These young me:i must be '>f the tinest physical and mental lyuv, active, alert, and ua- Uiually intelligent. From Canada over oue thousand of such young men have joined the Royal Flying Corps as avia- ticn cadets in irainini; and over 550 are oDicera in 'he Royal Naval Air Service, the naval branch of the Hying service. Besides this liOtiO Caaaaians have joined the Royal Flying Corps as mechanics, helpers, etc., the rank and tile of the corps It is said to he an encouraging evi dence of the spirit of the Cauadinii p3opl9 that so nisny ] ouog Canadians have joined the most difficult and ardu- ous service ; also, to be further proof (f Canada's deep and sincere interest in (he war. A-fi Pay Will Be The Same Men selected under the Military Service Ad will receive the same pay as those now on active service receive. Pay will ^rt h^m the time a man reports for duty. Money from the Patriotic Fund and Separ- ation AJlowance will also be available for sele<fled men. Canadian soldiers are well paid. The fact that wages in Canada are generally higher than those paid in Europe is recogni zed in the system of remuneration for men on adtive service. Clothing and all equipment in addition to food is also ." supplieo to the Canadian soldier, leaving /^ him with no expense except personal incidentals. The rate of pay for men in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, other than commissioned officers, is as follows: ^} 'W|l?4- Ceylon Chat R. r.ieilie and wife left Friday to visit the former's parents at Walkerton. As in the case of those already gone overseas, Separation Allowances will be available for those dependent for livelihood upon seleded men. The Separation Allowance is $20.00 per month for the rank and file, $25.00 for sergeants and ^affrsergeants and $30.00 'or warrant officers. The experience is that many men can afford to assign half their pay to dependents, in addition. A considerable number of men who have enlisted in the Canadian forces have found themselves better off under the army rate of pay, which is granted in addition to board, lodging, clothing, equipment, transportation, etc., than they were while in civilian positions. Their wants are provided for, and they receive a steady addition to the bank account each month. h$ued by The Military Service Council, 1J2 HARDWAREIlif UUm. -^♦M- ; Carefully Corrected Each Week Screen Doors & Windows l"'""^'''";-: H •" i''I e-ggs, fresn 4) o 4t) Poultry Netting .^^•;°»' ^--''J-^B - J 9 i.)ars <()to,.i u • r ' ^'b*'" 1 ;iO to 2 10 ra/is ureen Hariey itotoito Z, f • n I Buckwheat 96 to 9ii enoleum L:ce rowder Hammocks & Hooks ] Strayed Paints Sl Varnishes '• From lot .'.i ..n the 12th cno.. .Arte- tnesia, .i dark red steer one year <.
