CARRUTHBRS, SWP means Sherwin-Williams Paint (Prepared). This is the best paint for you to use because it is made of pure materials â€" pure lead, pure zinc, pure Linseed Oil, and pure coloring pigments which are thoroughly mixed and ground in scientific proportions by powerful machinery. It is better than the old fashioned hand-mixed paint because the materials are put together according to correct chemical formulae which have been tested out in a practical way. • Its fine grinding makes it cover nearly 50% more surface than hand-mixed paint. SWP Is an economical paint because It will cover the greatest amount of surface, wear longest, and look best.â€" Ask us for color cards. FRANK W. GrMlay Was Not tha First to Say, "Go Wact, Young Man." Who Bald, "Go west, young man?" Tbe phrase tans often been credited to Horace Greeley, but be was not tb« first to use It anil once denied that b« said It. It was written by John B. It. Soule, a brilliant youns man who ed- ited tbe Terre Haute Express In 1851-a nicbard W. Tbompson of Terre Haute advised blm to go west and grow up with tbe country, adding; "Why, John, you could write an arti- cle that would be attribated to Horace Greeley if you tried." Soule modestly doubted It, but Thompson insisted, and Soule prom- ised to try. Tbe result was an artlcl* in the Express on tbe opportunities ofTered to young men by the west, which began by saying that Horace Greeley could never have giveu bet- ter advice than (hat contained in tba words "Go west, young man." It was B supposititious quotation from Gree- ley, but the article was copied, and pretty soon the supposititious phrase was attributed to Greeley himself. After it bad received wide circulation the New York Tribune came out witli 11 reprint of the Express article, ac- companied by a footnote by Mr. Gree- ley saying tbat be was not the author of the expression, but he fully In- dorsed it ond joined in saying, "Go west, young man; go west"â€" Indian- apolis News. Fewer Parson* Seem to Drink, Yst More Liquor I* Consumed. It is the testimony of the Internal revenue receipts of our own govem- tiicnt that, notwithstanding the note- worthy extension of tho dry areas by reason of state wide prohibitions and local option laws, consumption of al- coboUc liquor has greatly Increased. In addition to the dry areas establish- ed by political action (we use the term in Its broad sense) there has bccu wide promotlou of personal abstinence be- cause of rules against drinking estab- lished by largo employers of labor, who realize the wisdom of guarding tho safety of employees and the pub- lic against accident, as well as pro- moting general efficiency. We know that In addition to these powerful Influences there has grown up a socinl opposition to Intemperate habits that has a wholesome efTcct iignlnst overindulgence In Intoslcntlug liquors and in favor of total abstinence. In any circle of acquaintances tbe per- sistent drinkersâ€" the men who "make business of It"â€" do not appear to be numerous. Tho question naturally arises in con- sequence. Where does all the liquor go, and who uses It? Increase of popula- tion In the wet areas does not account for all of itâ€" Pittsburgh Chronlcle-Tel- egrapb. An Earl's Duel With â-  Butler. About the middle of tbe last century the Lord Ilosebery of that time was iu Paris, and in paying a call one day ho was received so rudely by tho butler that he complained to his friend of the servant's conduct But the butler bad been a noncommissioned officer In tbe French army, and as such he chal- lenged Lord Rosebery to a daeL Tho earl accepted, and two shots were ex- changed without result But Lord Itosebery was angered at his own con- descension and afraid his antagonist might lay aside bis military rank an! resume his duties as a servant, thus exposing an earl to tbe reproach of having fought with a butler. So ho settled an annuity of £250 on the man on condition that be did not return to domestic service. The condition was faithfully observed on both side*. ^] Canadian National Sept 13 EXHIBITIOIV ^ TORONTO ^^ $130,000 '"„8f^jr $1S0.000 "PATRIOTIC YEAR" Model Military Camp Destritction of Battleships Battles of the Air MAMMOTH Military Display MARCH OF THE ALLIES Farm under Cultivation.
