i "TRUTH BEFORE FAVOR." - PRINCIPLED NOT MEN.' VOI 33 No. 31 Flcstiertoii, Ont., Thursday February 26, W. H. TBURSTON E . D n PtO The Holmes Case As Seen From The Outside Eight people four men, two women and two children all living in a small one-roomed cabin, was the discovery made b/ Mr. A. E. 1 r.mt, the locl gent for the Children's Aid Society, when he was called to Eugenia last week to investigate the case of the children who were in circuinstaiues that were far from being ideal, says the Owen Sound Sun. And while Mr. Trout was in Eu- genia making arrangemi nts foJ the re- moval of the children tha mother, who had been lying very low, died very sud- denly as the result of neglect. " It is the hardest thing I have seen iiuce I was ap- pointed agent," said Mr. Trout. The one-roomed frame shack, which u abouT Uxlti feet, is located about one mile east of Eugenia village, and was oc- cupied l>y James Leppard and his wife, their daughter Mrs. A. Holme?, her hus- band and two children, also a brother of Mrs. Leppird's and a son aged about 18^ This made up the party of .eight who M- cupied the one room. There were no par- titions or curtains, and only a little scant furniture, including two beds, on one of which lay the dying woman. A cooking stove and a few crude cooking uten- s : ls completed the furnishings of the room. Entrance was to be had by pass- ing through an old tumbled-down wood- shed and going through an old door. The house had been banked up on both sides to keep out the colJ. How the eight managed to exist in such an abode is a mystery. There were ft>ur aMebod- ied men on the premises, but they all appeared to be perfectly content wlfh their surroundings and w ith their hand- to-mouth existence. Mr. Trout reached there Thursday ev- ening and after seeing the state of attain he returned to Eugenia to arrange for the 'removal [of the woman to Owen Sound hospital and intended to brii.g her here the next day. But when -Mr Trout and the doctor returned the next day to takeaway the unfortunates, they found that tho sick woman had passed away during the night. The woman had been bick for nearly three mouths since tho birth of her biby, and evidently hoi- death was tho result of lack of proper care and medical attention. Mr. Trout ha.l secured the assistance i.f a kind neighbor. Mrs. Carr, and the two children one L'i years old aud the other a bub?- were brought to the Owen Sound shelter on the noon train. That such shocking conditions could exist in a civilized community u indeed a surprise. And it is still more surpris- ing that they were to be found in au en- lightened rural community such as is to be found in tho prosperous township east of Flesherton. In justice to tho neigh- bors it inn-i be said that they did not roalizo the circumstance* under which the household existed, as tho Holmes and Leppard families kept very much to th.'roselvos. It was not until Mr. Trout and Dr. lloszoll made known their dis- covery that people in the surrounding \ country were awaro of the disgraceful circumstances. The two families were living un a farm, and but for their shift- less natures and complete lack of ambi- tion, should have been prcspen us Portaw Mr. and Mrs. Jehn Wilkinson's third son, Jiinmie, about ton years old, has been hovering hetwoen life and death the past week ,'with uppendicitU and is yet u: < critical state. Mr. George Carter of Toronto visited litely at the homo of J. 11. Watson. Mr. Robert Corn Held has returned to Weyburn, Sask., after an extended visit at tho parental home. Mrs. D. L. Davidson and son Gordon re visiting with Mrs. T. R. McKenzie. Mr. and Mrs. James Ryder of North Butleford Sask., are visiting with num- erous relatives of this part. Miss Millie Lyons of Proton Station, visited with her cousin Miss Isla Lyons. The patrons of the post ottiee here re- grot very much its disontinunce. Since its establishment about a down y9ars ago, it has proved a great boon to tfjis part. However, the rural delivery is a great convenience, and our courier? deserve credit for promptness. Fe v er sh am I terns A meeting of the ratepayers of the Township of Osprey, was held io the Orange hall here on Saturday last to or- ganize and appoint a township committee to secure data, and be in readiness to assist the Hydro Electric engineers when they come to i un their survey over the proposed route from Guelph to Collmg- w.jd. One of the engineers traversed the proposed route last week and express- ed himself as well pleased with our Township and thriving village, and claimed it would compare very favorably and in fact outstrip ionic of our neigh- boring villages for business who have had rbilrosd accommodation for years. Aud we would say to some of the men in that village, who have seemed to be so much against the electric road coming this w*y, that if it should couie this way we will make them sit up and take no- tice. The want of railroad accommodati- on has been our only drawback as our township will compare very favorably with any township in the county as it is and we have aliraya had to drive from 14 to If* and 3> miles to the nearest rail- road ; aud we would say, hurrah for the Hon. Adam Beck and the Hydro Electri c commission, who now come forward and express themselves as determined to give those isolited parts of the province the long locked for accommodation. The engineers gave our Reave, Mr. .1. Thom- pson, the assurance that their eugineors would go over this part of tho route in a short lime. We are very sorry to have to report ;i very serious accident having occurred to Mrs. Oeo. Thompson of thi tenth line bout a week ag >, which may result in Mrs. Thompson losing the sight of one of her eyes. Mrs. Thompson was hold- ing the light for her husband while he drove some nails into a board in ihe stable, when one of the nails He* from under the hammer, and struck her in the eye, piercing the eyeball. Dr. Roszell of Maxwell was hastily called and was soon in attendance, but advised the ser- vices of an eye specialist. Mr. Thomp- son took her to Owan Sound hospital, and we underatuud it will be some days yet before the specialist will be able to say whether she will lose the eye or not. Their many friends express sympathy and h.ipe that the Dr. may be able to re- store the eye and that Mrs. Thompson may have a speedy recovery from hor afBwtioa. Mr. ,uid Mrs. Alex. Hudson of Oguia, Sask., visited wiih Mrs. John Hudson ,f this village a few days last week be- fore they returned to their home in the West.
