The proraoterrf of a railway from Mcaford to Owen Sound sent a big delegation to Toronto on Tuesday to ask the Onlaiio government to guarantee tlioir bonds. This bolts like a fair proposition and probably Mr. Whitney will look favorably upon it. Mr. Whitney will also be asked to guarautce the bonds of the Eugenia electric development company, which claims that the government is largely leiponsible for the delay in the de- veloping of their power, through the combiuing of Eugenia with Severn power by the hydro electric commis- sion. The proposition is that the government guarantee only $150,000 of these bonds in order to raise money to complete the undertaking, and we are informed that the member for East Grey will aid in the matter by his vote and influence. 1 he promotois of the Eugenia power probably undertook « greater financial tank than they im- agined. The works have been at a standstill for a couple of years past, and this seems too bad, ccnsidering the thousands of dollars that have alicady been spent upon ihem. We trust the gfivernment will see its way clear to helping the company in the manner suggested. A guaranteeing of the bonds can work no injury and will aid very materially an iiidusliy that is worthy of aid. t form an opinion on any controversial â- "'•'"''"'•-'""'' '""='^''""' '" "i* township, subject without having objecticnable | ;'."""^'^^<='''"1 '"K" "'"^'"l «"th a i<ir»l â-  , . , 11 ... Ask rtp. 10 and Mr. Masson of Owen Sound says there is no doubt whatever that the buildin^'of the Huron Ontario railway will begin this spring, but that it will bo a steam lino and not electric, as we have long been led to suppose. And thns the dream of riding from Owen Sound to Toronto 111 two hours is rudely Hhailcrcd. 000 The clerical tournamont that has been inj progress in Toronto during the past week has created intense interest throughout the country and the result may bo more far-reaching than cither of the contestants iinagin'- ed. It ia not in the piovince of a secular newspaper to offer opini.mson church doctrine, but wo may be ex- cused in saying that Dr. Carman's attack on He v. Mr. Jackson came as a painful surprise to many a man who lield the Dr. iu reverence for the work he has done in the past. It was uot so much surprise at tlie stand taken by Dr. Carman a^ it was the bitter, coiilcmptuotis, unforgiving tone exhibited throughout what we may call his eucyclical.
