The Advance secured the following opinion regarding affairs in Owen Sound. He said: "I have been visiting (.)wen Sound on an aver„ ; age of once every mouth during the past two years, spending some times only a few hours and at other times '. two or three days. I have always: stopped at hotels, and I do not think i that iu two years I have seen half a i dozen people intoxicated, either on the streets or in hotels. There may bo drinking, and possibly to a large extent, but it is not flaunted in. the public eye as it formerly was. In this respect (Jwcn Sound today con- 1 trasls very favorably with other towns i ^ of its size throughout the province." I ^ Christmas Goods AT BOYDS Christmas is approaching. Cttfttomers will please remember that Toys are all on sale in Hardware Dept. of our store. The youn^ ladies in charge will be pleased to see you i there. F. T. Hill « Co. Markdale The dreamer as to Canada's great future can conjure up a very pretty I picture of the great things iu store for I us and very close at hand now. The I Grand Trunk Pacific will cut across! and open up country 400 miles north j of Old Ontario. It will bring down to us the wonderful mineral and timboi riches of the north and enlarge the market for onr fruits and grains to such an exto'it that wc will have a market at home for everything we can grow, at better prices than could possibly bo got by export. Already the effect is being felt as regards Ontario frr.it, the price of which has been steady with an upward trend for a few ye.ars, and many shipments of apples are finding their way north as the railways penetrate towards Hudson's bay. When that body of water is reached thousands of people will be engaged in the great fisheries and mines that are known to exist there. Immense deposits of iron, copper and other mincials have been found in and around the great inland sea, and will in. the near future give occupation to many thousands ol people. Imagine the market, that this development would open up for the farmers and business men of Ontario 1 With the speed at which railways are now penetrating north- ward it can only be a matter of a \ery short time until wo will see this transformation, and a continu- ous stream of northern products will pour south, while as continuous a stream of southern manufaoturea and produce of the farm will flow north- ward. In this great development that is at our doors the farmer has as great an interest as any one, and should prepare to reap his harvest with the rest. Perhaps in no line will the faimer get better profits than in his fruit, ior which there is likely to be a good market for all h6 can grow â€"apples, plums, pears, peaches and grapes. Thcso are things that can- not be grown in the north and will have to be purchased from us. Wo believe that the orchards will, in a few years, become the most valuable asset of oiu- Old Ontario farms, but they will have to bo cared for scienti- fioally and carefully as they are cared for at present in the Kootenay and Idaho. Worm eaten and stunted fruits will never be wanted. The possibilities of the near future opened up by the development of our northland, with ita masses of mineral and timber wealth, are almost beyond the powers of imagination, and are a subject too large to deal with at length. There is preparation to be made for them by all who propose to participate in the benefits that will accrue, and perhaps to no one is this forethought more necessary than to the farming community. A a we have said, the dreamer can conjure up a pretty picture, but these things arc not dreams, they are new vistas opening up before our eyes and new possibilities that could scarcely have been imogined thirty years aso. ^ ^ Crockery Dept III this departiupiit we have the mo.st extensive line of novelties ever be- fore shown.
