S. Lake Eric To the Editor of The AdtlAnix. Dear Sir â€" I think I promised, or asid I might send you some notes on voyage. We have been on board this ship uno weuk to-day (August 8th), and are Hear- ing the close of our voyage which has lieen a very pleasant one, beini; favored with bright Hkiea and calm seas all the time, excepting one day. We left home on Wednesday, July 29th, during the hottest day, or week, of the summer, and, leaving Toronto the following evening, arrived in Montreal on Friday mornini{. The day was oppressively hot â€" so much so as to Huspend business in some ostablishmeuts. After attending to the transportation of our baggage from the C. P. R. station to the steamship dock we went up the inclined railway to the top of Mount Royal, where, under the shade of the oak trees with which it is thickly plant- ed, we could escape the humid heat of the city, which is spread out at the base of the mountain. In the evening we went down and by trolley cars through the busy city and its narrow streets. We visited some places of historic interest â€" the Champ de Mars, the Nelson's Column and the Chateau de Ramsay, tne old Governor's residence, which is now used as a museum and picture gallery. It is one of the old buildings of the city, dating back some 200 years, and has as.suciation8 with the principal men and events prominent in tno histoiy of Old Canada. At eight p. m. we went on board our steamer, went to bed, and awoke in the morning quietly steaming down the rivor St. Lawrence. Tlie day was fine and the scenery on the shores beautiful and interestinc. Two of the pkices pas»ed have a tragic interest^one the city of Three Rivers, so recently devastated by fire, the heart of the city being a mass of fragmentary walls of charred mason'y. Approaching Quebec we came upon the ruins of the immense iron bridge which collapsed in course of construction, precipitating some eighty men into the deep and swift flowing river. Nearly all were drowned. The span when complet- ed would have been the birxest single span in the world, and the cost over six millions of dollars. One lialf of the structure is a mass of tangled ir<m beams and rods and angle iron. Many hun- dreds of tons are sunk or hanging sus- pended from the short anchorage. Soon we sweep past the ruin and Quebec loomi up on our left bank and we observe Wolfe's Cove where he landed his men the night preceding the battle of Quebec, which decided the fate and ownership and government of half a continent. In Quebec harbor our vessel was anchored alongside a French wur-ves8el which had coma to the cele- bration of the ter-centenary of Quebec and would have left with the other war vessels, English and'Anierioan, but had the misfortune to lose her anchor and anchor chain in the river, and they were remaining to recover it. The value of the chain and pendant was estimated at over f 2.000. We went through the straits of Belle Isle and conHO(iuoiitly did not reach the ocean until Tuesday. On Monday it was rough and nearly all tlio passeiigurs were sick, but Tuexutiy saw nearly all in thoir places at the dining tables. iSinco then the weather has been very fine and we have had an exceedingly nice pataogo. We saw many icebergs and sailed ([uite near to one â€" two mountain ptaks of ice connected at the liase on one immense lierg. In between was a basin in which a ship might float, and a cove at one side gave an inlet through which a l>oat might enter. liohind the basin the two peaks were connected by a huge wall of ice. Another ber){ was seen many miles away, estimated to be several times the size of the one we were passing. We have the Marconi system of tele- graphy on iHtard, and with the pormiasi<m of tlie Cajitain, which I obtained for our inirty, wo were privileged' to visit and explore the wizard's den, where the operator very kindly explained and exhibited to us the action and properties of all his wonderful apparatus. In the hold of the ve.sHel there is also installed the lately invented, wonderful seii tele- phtme, by which we can be advised from any lighthouse station of our nearneaa to shore when lights cannot be seen for fog. Not only can signals be given by ringing of a bull but conversation may be had with parties ashore miles away. It is telephone ooiinoction thi-ough the water without wire. Our vessel is not so large as others on which I have ct'osscd, but is a well-equipped and very steady boat. Sunday, Bthâ€" We have had a change in weather, roush, boisterous nnd raining but not cold. Service this morning in the saloon, conducted by the Purser, Rev. Dr. Biyoe of Winnipeg and Rev. J. Cole of Rome, U. 8. The last named was the preacher, a man of the build, type and characteristics of our late Rev. Dr.Potta. Last Sundaytha preacher was Dr. lUyce, who reminds mo much of our Dr. Carmen. I have found them both very gonial pcrsimaguM as follow voyagers. Indeed, the wh<ile company of {wisseugers are about the most agreeable, chummy, iolly lot I ever saw on a voyage. They Imve been in sumo caRcs wi.shing for a sight I'f l;»nd and by to-morrow will bo wishing the voyage werb a day or two longer. Wo wore to have sighted land this evening hut owing to the rain and thick iiiist may not see it until tomorrow morning, when we expect to bo passing near the north coast of Ireland. We Ate all well. Yonrs truly, --M. K. Richardson. w Three Great Features of the Heda** Furnace Fused Joints make the ' ' Hecla' ' permanently airtight and sanitary. The heated air is fresh and ptire, because no gas, dtist or smoke can get into the airchamber. Steel-Ribbed Firepol has steel instead of cast iron flanges. 97 of these steel flanges are fused to the out- side of the firepot giving it three times as much radiating surface as any other style. In a three years' test the steel ribbed pot showed a saving of fuel of over 11%. Trlangolar Bar Grate enables you to clear any part 01 the fire of ashes. There are four grates. Each can be shaken separately. It gets all the ashes out â€" saves coal â€" and means a clean fire. Made by the makers of famona "Peerlesa Peninimlar" Raugea. Stop in and let us show you all the new features of the 1908 "Hecla." gs NORRIS BROS, - (f; - FLESHERTON Bi;siNE.ss Cards UUULLOUaH ft TOUNO ^ Banker Markdale Oo a general banking baaiDese.
