Amon:* the cases on the list is that of the County vs. Markdale, an action brought againut t-fae villdgu for refusal to fulfil its ens:a-4ement re lig'itinij of homo of indii.s:r7. The ratn.s, though continued, have r.ot dims much injury in this vicinity. On the contrary, the growing time h:i3 leen with us for the pait week and vegetable life is springing forth with woi.derful speed. Sproulo, Cressley &'^Co. have moved into the corner store lately vacated by T. J. Sheppard. According to tho assesors statistics, Oiveri Sound's popu'at.oa h.us passed the ll\ClX) mark, an increase of 470 during the past year, placing the population at lO.liJG. During tha p.ast 7 years the asscsnient figures have shown a unifoim gain each year. It is now claimid that Owen Sound is the large.st town in the Province, and applica*i'-n for incjrp"ta- tiun as a city is being talked of. The ajses.sraeut is ?4,5C4,7SO, an advance of nearly a million dollars, of which build- ings and lands amount to S763,4!)5. Lit us point out onoe more th.al if it is intended to do anythine in the way of ci^lebrating, this summer, it is hi^h time the Citiz.-ns Committee, which h.».=i con trol of the funds, got the matter under way. At :he annual meeting of the W^.M.!=. of the Methodist church, held last week, the following otflcers were elected : Pits.. Mrs. W, U. Thurston ; 1st V. P.. Mrs. J. Clinton ; 2i]d V. P . iWrs. W. U. Bunt ; Ree. Sec, Mrs. G. Mitchell , Cor. Sec. Mrs. VV. .A. Armstrong ; Tt-eas., M:s. W. Trimble. Mrs. Ge... Mitchell will represent the Auxiliary at the Branch meeting to be held in St. Paul's church, Toronto, on May -30, 31 aud June 1. This has been the most successful year since tho society was organized twelve years ago, §65 being the amount raised. The railway surveyors on the proposed western branch were around tbLs end of the line last week. From PticeviUe they only ran but one line to connect with thii brauch of the C. P. R. although others were partially run. The new line if run as surveyed will tap this line about fifty rods north of Boyd's mill, some three miles south of the present station. This is taken by the » iseacres to mean that the company proposes to straighten its line, by coming nearer thi« village, thus avoid- ing the heavy grade which at present exists. Whether or no such is the inten- ti.in remains to be seen, but â€" may it be so. The route via the village was sur- veyed many years ago, starting at the Duiham mad corner within a fow rods of where the present statf quit work, and tho company have that survey in their possession. This would seem to give « >lor at least to the surmisD that some such change is io contemplation. has exerted an^influence for t^ood, which will live long after he h»,? gone from u.«.
