The various sorts of roots i>o a long way to- wards supplying a chtiap and satisfactory substitute fiir i;rasH, and in conseqnencrt inauy million bushelsare grown annually. Large quantities of seed of turnips, swedes, mangolds and carrots are used each year on Canadian farms, but the cjopa produced arc frequently disappoint- ing. As a rule our fariricrs havH hitherto been entirely in the dark regarding the sources of supply of such .seeds, aud the methods of growing them. The Seed Division of the Dominion Department of Agriculture has been investigating those questions, and is able to oU'er suggestions that cannot fail to bo of value to growers of root crops. According to Chief G. U. Clark of the Seed Division, a few farmers in Canada make a specialty of growing root crop seed, but practically the whole amount of such seed offered in the trade is imported from Europe and is grown in France, Germany and England. A favor- able climate and cheap libor have made these countries the seed gardens of the world. A few notes on the way in which seeds are grown there, will help to explain why farmers often fail to get roots show- ing good type and uniform excellence all over ft field. Turnips, swedes, mangolds and carrots are all biennial plants, that is they store up nourishment in the root during the whole of the tivat year, aud use that store of food for the production of seed during the second and final year of their lite. Most of our domesticated plants have been evolved from wild types through long years of .selection, cultivation and cross fertilization. The original wild types were usually annuals, prtiducitig seed the first year, aad there is a tendency among all improved* plants to revert rap- idly to the old unimproved types, when- ever they are deprived of that careful attenlion to selection and cultivation which ha.i brought them up to their pres- eiit high standing. Canadian fanners have not fully rea- lized that tTie value of root crop seeds is far from depending on their vitality alone. It is even more inipoitant that they be taken from carefully grown and selected stocks. We seldom see a tield of roots that are uniformly true to type and free from abnormal gtowth of top, large necks and ill shaped, prongy roots. This undesirable slate of affairs is largely duo to the sowing of seeds taken from stocks of a similar chanrcter. The best quality of seed is produi^ed from selected and transplanted loots. Seed of turnips and swedes lb produced in quantity in this niantier in the north of Scotland. Tlie climate of Scotland, like that of Canada, is such that root crop seeds can only be succe.ssfillly produced by harvesting the toots before winter and tiaiisplantiiig them the following spring. The bulk of llie seed of those crops.wliich is imported for the Canadian trade, is grown in France and the South of Kim- land, wlieio the climate is such that the roots may rctnniii unharvested throuah the winter and produce seed the following year. Suino of the more reliable seed growers in these countries exercise a f>reat deal of cars in the production of their Slock. They supply the seed from their ovin colected stocks to small farmers, who erow quantities of seed for them under contract. The best quality of seed otVered in the Canadian trade is grown in this way. There is however evidence to show that a ureiit deal of the seed of IhcHo crops olbrcd in Canada, is of much inferior quality. 'I'lie increased labor re(|uired to grow seed foin selected truiisplaiited roots, raises the pi ice above the range of .\inorican seed linns. l*'or this ihe seeds- man is iiiil to blaine. Our tanners have domai'ded cheap seeds willnmt any etiarantee as to quality, and Ihe seedsmen have simply tried to meet the demand. A great ileal of the root crop used m Canada is grown by Huiall irrespoiihihlo h'uiopoan fanners whose chief olijr-ct i.s to olit.»in a niaximnm yield of seed, iiide- peiultnlof iisqnality.
