Dynamite in Barrie.

_Narrow Escape._ Barrie, Nov. 17.--During the nights of the 17th and 18th of August last some miscreants placed a dynamite cartridge about seven inches long and one and a half inches in diameter on the floor of Mr. J. G. Strong's residence of this town, to which attached a fuse about a foot long, and paper saturated in coal oil. The paper was ignited and was about half burned before the discovery was made by two of Mr. Strong's sons. The infernal machine was sent to Toronto and tested, and proved to be one of the most powerful kind. The case was laid before the Attorney-General, and was then placed in the hands of Government detectives, who have since been engaged in ferreting up the case. It is said that some clue has been found, but as yet the evidence is not sufficient. The matter has been kept secret up to last Monday evening, when at a Scott Act meeting addressed by Rev. Mr. Keefer, the public were made aware of the fact. The motive that prompted such a diabolical act can only be attributed to the prominent part Mr. Strong has taken in advocating the passing of and carrying into effect of the Scott Act. He was the President of the Association at the time the Act was passed and this year the Vice-President, and his services were sometime since recognized by the County Alliance presenting him with a gold watch. There is not a more respectable citizen in Barrie than Mr. Strong, and he personally could have no enemies.
