A stabbing of a serious nature occurred at Chatsworth on Monday evening last. As far as we have been able to learn it had its origin in a quarrel which took place on Dominion Day between one of the young men of the village and some colored men named Bowie. The Bowies are described as quiet, inoffensive citizens when let alone, but passionate when roused, as they sometimes are by the thoughtless taunts of young men in the neighbourhood. On Monday evening it appears that Allen Bowie was passing down the street, when several young men came out of a tavern, and one of them (not the one stabbed) said "He could lick any d----d nigger in the place," making hostile demonstrations. There was a fight, and Bowie appeared to be getting the better of his assailant when one of the other young men kicked him on the head. His brother and wife then appeared on the scene and got Bowie away; but the young men followed them up with abuse and threats, and another fight took place, Bowie plunging a knife into the neck of a young man named Alex. Mitchell. The wound was a very deep one, the blood spurting several feet from it. Bowie was at once arrested and has been committed to gaol here to await his trial. The wounded man had medical attendance promptly, and we are pleased to learn though the wound is a serious one he is expected to recover.--/O.S. Times./
