- Description
- This ornate structure was Fort William's second City Hall, located on Donald Street, where the present City Hall is today. If you look closely, you will see that someone (not us!) has drawn an arrow, indicating where the old public library was until 1912., Fire destroyed Fort William's first City Hall on March 10th, 1903. On October 15th, 1903, the cornerstone was laid for a new building. The mayor, city council, clergy, a citizens' band, as well as teachers and students marched in a procession from the Fort William Central School to commemorate the occasion.
From the Brodie Library's Special Collections room, the souvenir booklet, ' A Picturesque Souvenir of Fort William, Ontario,' published around 1913. - Notes
