Description
Peter McKellar has been called a 'Renaissance' man. He was a surveyor, geologist, mining engineer, historian and inventor. He and his brothers, John and Donald were responsible for discovering and developing a number if mineral deposits in Northwestern Ontario., Peter McKellar discovered the Thunder Bay Silver mine, the Silver Lake iron deposits, and the Enterprise Copper Mines at Black Bay. In 1884 he announced the discovery of iron ore deposits near Atikokan. He invented a rock breaker and crusher powered by a rotary engine. He co-edited Fort William's first newspaper the 'Perambulator'. In 1908 he founded the Thunder Bay Historical Society. Peter McKellar died in 1929 at the age of 92., x
