- Description
- Automobiles festooned with Union Jack flags prepare to cross the newly opened bridge at Pigeon River. A white tent, which is the Customs office, is seen to the left. A motorcade of sixty-five cars, two Highland pipers, and a motor and tire repair shop on wheels, made the arduous five and one half hour journey to Grand Marais in order to celebrate the official opening of the 'Outlaw Bridge'. The Outlaw Bridge was built by the Rotary Clubs of Thunder Bay and Duluth in order to make travel by road possible between the two countries. It was called the Outlaw Bridge for many years because it had been built without official sanction of either US or Canadian government officials.
