- Description
- Early morning at Pakwash Bay, 1946. These cabins were used to house the highway construction crews for the Red Lake highway that opened August 17, 1947. The camp at Pakwash Bay housed 100 men on the gravel shore of Pakwash Lake. Five hundred men were hired through Manpower (Federal Employment Agency). Labour turnover was high, as one contractor said 'one out of every three men would walk out of the bush and return home by train, due to the hard labour and isolation'.
