Description
The new permanent homes in the Hydro Colony housed radio operator Jack Schwass, and his wife, line foreman Art Westran and his wife Ena, station maintenance man Harold Evans and his wife, operator Ed Smith, his wife and son, operator Royden and Gladys McDonald, Andy and Petra (MOM) Inguard. Clara Williams was a self appointed district nurse and mid-wife. She was often seen in her canoe with a bag of Indian herbs and medicines that were usually effective with the local community. Pregnant women would normally travel to Goldpines in Hydro's steelcraft boat, 'The Lollypop'. During the winter, the women had to travel in a tarp covered sleigh by motor toboggan over rough trail along the north-west side of the English River to Goldpines Mine. From there, they would be flown to the hospital in Sioux Lookout.
