-- 11, Tuesday; Oct: 27,°1992, News' One person's history is another's garbage The Rossport Historical Society is hoping they will be able to obtain more artifacts and photos for the caboose they are converting to a mini- museum. Since the railroad and fish- ing industries have made up such an important part of Ross- port's history, one half of the caboose will be devoted to fishing, and the other to the railroad. "We're working on the inside now, trying to keep the interior like it was in 1945," says society member Judi Sundland. "However, without photos and verbal information from people that remember the caboose during those years, we are lost." As a result, Sundland says people should call them before they throw away a box of papers, a CPR newsletter or even things like old food tins. "They could go on display in the kitchen area of the caboose," she says. "One man's junk is another's trea- sure." And she says that with museums and historical soci- eties, this is especially true. "So-many: times valuable» papers and artifact articles are discarded without the thought of the historical information they contain," she says. Sundland says that even old store receipts show how prices have changed, what groceries were important and what prod- ucts were used. Books and news publications give the events of the day, help with dating buildings, roads, stores and provide stories from the past that may never survive "It's amazing how even an old spice jar shows the changes over the years. The label may have changed, or the con- tainer could now be plastic or glass instead of tin." any other way. After years of trying to obtain as much of the history of the Rossport area as possi- ble, Sundland says that mem- bers of the Historical Society have been told many times that they "should have been here last week", before somebody threw out boxes of papers, periodicals, photos and even household items to the dump. "It's an exasperating experi- ence," she says. "Especially when you know some of the articles will never be seen again. It's amazing how even an old spice jar shows the changes over the years. The label may have changed, or the container could now be plastic or glass instead of tin. Or the _ company may no longer be in business." In looking at old photos of the area, Sundland says we can tell how people dressed and what kind of activities they enjoyed. During the commer- cial fishing days in Rossport, boat designs changed--as did the materials used to build them. So the boat's engines themselves have become the major factor in dating them. "It seems the public is always aware of changes in fashion or cars, but they're not always thinking about written information, or the articles they use daily," says Sundland. "One hundred years from now, people will be interested to know what we ate, how we lived, and what tools we used in the kitchen and workshop. What we use today will tell the historians of tomorrow about the 1990s. "Tt's continual history mak- ing, but it also slips through our fingers very quickly, and is often left unrecorded, never to be seen again."
