Liz Boutilier Broker 825-9492 Dom Filane with his parents at last week's reception. by Darren MacDonald The News Schreiber Olympian and Canadian Boxing Champion Dominic Filane returned to a hero's welcome in Schreiber last Saturday afternoon at the Royal Canadian Legion. More than one hundred peo- ple turned out to see Filane accept awards from the Feder- al, Provincial and Municipal governments, in recognition of his Olympic achievement. Cochrane - Superior MP Rég Bélair sent a Canadian Flag along with a letter of congratu- lations, while former MPP Jack Stokes presented Filane with a plaque signed by Premier Bob Rae on behalf of the govern- ment of Ontario. Don Beno presented Filane with a plaque from the Canadi- an Amateur Boxing Associa- tion, while Schreiber Reeve Bob Krause made a presenta- tion on behalf of the municipal- ity, and Earline Johnson made a presentation on behalf of the Legion. In addition to the presenta- tions, Schreiber Heritage and Tourism Committee member Bill Campbell unveiled the design for a highway sign being erected in Filane's hon- our. Sponsored by the Township, the Chamber of Commerce and the Heritage and Tourism Com- mittee, two signs on each side of the highway will eventually be erected. "I don't know quite what to say," an emotional Filane told the crowd. "Going to Barcelona was a dream of a lifetime for me, but just as exciting has been the reception I've received since I've come home." He also said that boxing has given him many experiences he only dreamed of before. "I've met kings and queens, sports heroes, even movie stars," said the 23-year-old fighter. "'And what I've learned is that if you believe in your- self, and if you're willing to work hard, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to." And, as a parting comment to the crowd, Filane said that he's not finished with the Clympics yet. "Hopefully we can finish this fairy tale off in Atlanta with a medal," he said, refer- ring to the 1996 Olympics. In an interview during the reception, Filane said that at first, he thought he had let everyone down. "The first couple of nights after the fight, I couldn't sleep," he said. "I kept replay- ing the fight over in my mind." continued on page 2 A COMPLETE INSURANCE SERVICE COMPETITIVE RATES FOR QUALITY COVERAGE TERRACE BAY INSURANCE LTD. * Home * Business * Auto * Cottages * Recreational Vehicles * Etc.
