Page 5, News, Tuesday, January 21 1992 <News/Letters ' Chimo Club celebrates its twentieth anniversary Although they won't have the big celebrations until the summertime, the official twentieth anniver- sary of the founding of the Chimo Club in Schreiber was last week, and mem- bers got together last week to commemorate it. The big celebration will take place sometime this summer, when more people can attend, and they can move outdoors. Also, many members have headed south for the winter, and would miss the festivities if they were held now. But there was an anniversary dinner and cake, and more than 20 members braved last Fri- day's cold temperatures to attend. Letter to the editor "Outrageous increase" in dog license fees Dear editor, Gold plated dog licenses for Schreiber? The Township of Schreiber has recently posted their new rates for dog licenses in our community, effective Feb. 1, 1992: 1992 rate 1991 rate Female dogs -- not spayed $ 75.00 $ 20.00 spayed 25.00 10.00 Male dogs -- not neutered 50.00 10.00 neutered 25.00 5.00 From left, first vice-president Eva Gordon, Leona Fournier, treasurer Pat Guina, and president Elma Hart How can Schreiber Council justify this outrageous increase? I, for one, strongly object to these imposed rates. When recently confronted, and asked why such an increase was being imposed, one of our Councillors suggested that the increase was made in order to prevent dogs from running our streets. My question is, why are we, as responsible pet owners, who keep their dogs tied, being penal- Presentation to cabinet continued from page 1 thing that should be dealt with by the province," Houston said, adding that as far as he knows, there are no guidelines in place dealing with how to dispose of used oil. "If we can get the priorities set, hopefully our part of the province can be leaders, and show the way for others." Cr 'BE WATER SMART. Is it not the responsibility of our By-law Enforcement Officer to catch these dogs "running at large"? I strongly recommend that Council place severe fines on those who break this by-law. You can be assured that those individuals who are given a substantial fine for the release of their pet will keep them tied and off the streets. I definitely object to the number of dogs running loose in Schreiber, but enforcing this by-law is the solution to the problem -- not increasing the fees for a license. I, for one, will not be renew- ing our license if Council does not reverse this decision. Citizens, now is the time to speak your mind on this issue, before the new rates become effec- tive.
