O Market- place.........7-10 Community Futures groups get extra funds for operations by Darren MacDonald The News The Department of Employ- ment and Immigration Canada has announced that the Commu- nity Futures Program will be continued beyond its original mandate of six years. This means that when the original six year mandate of the Schreiber-Terrace Bay Commu- nity Futures office ends in 1993, it can apply for funding for another five years. Leshe Dickson, who is head of the local office, said one of the reasons funding has been extended is that the govern- ment's timetable for self-suffi- ciency was unrealistic. "The original plan was that the Community Futures Com- mittee would be organized to do long-range planning, and get the Business Development Centres up and running," Dickson said. Bélair wrote to Otto Jelinek last September requesting the service. "During the past summer, many boaters had not cleared customs before they arrived in Rossport," Bélair wrote in his letter. " They wanted to stay in the area, but were threatened with fines if they did not immediate- ly proceed to Thunder Bay. "At a time when our tourist industry is suffering, tourists will not want to visit Canada if they are harassed by govern- ment officials," Bélair said. He went on to say that com- munities like Rossport need support to build an infrastruc- ture for their tourism indus- tries. But in a letter dated Nov. 13, Jelinek told Bélair he was unable to fund the Customs service because his ministry's "committment to Employment and Immigration not to expand telephone reporting (which) would preclude its use to pro- vide Customs clearance." Jelinek also said that appointing an "acting customs and excise enforcement offi- cer" was not an option either because they cannot adequately replace a telephone reporting system. Jelinek did say that a new pilot program, called "Customs 2000", would allow persons crossing the border to carry a "Remote Area Border Crossing Permit" which would allow them to enter Canada without reporting to Customs. "This project only applies to the international border from Pigeon River through to and including Lake of the Wood," continued on page 11 = DIANNE O'NEILL A COMPLETE INSURANCE SERVICE COMPETITIVE RATES FOR QUALITY COVERAGE TERRACE BAY INSURANCE LTD. * * Home * Business * Auto * Cottages * Recreational Ve _ SIMCOE PLAZA TERRACE BAY 825 - 3246 + aa + bet Pie er ee Se ee ee ee re ee ee Se ee ee ee ~ hicles * Etc.
