Page 3, News, Tuesday, September 17 1991 Student learns to better EXPFess herself in English For Irene Kettle, a resident of Terrace Bay for 38 years, education is not something to be embarrassed about. "If you are working at it, it is because you want to improve yourself, " she said. That is something to be proud of. Irene has just completed a Grade 10 English correspon- dence course with the assis- tance of a tutor from the Schreiber Terrace Bay Adult Learning Program. Her first language is French and although she could speak and write English she had always wanted to learn how to better express herself in that language. "I learned my English through conversation and that way you don't learn to express yourself properly," she explained. "With my English I didn't know how to communicate - I knew writing but not communi- cating." Irene, a registered nursing assistant at McCausland Hospi- tal until retirement, has always believed strongly in education. When she had to quit school at a young age she took different course to keep herself involved. She also read English to her children through their school years to keep up with things. When they got older she decid- ed to return to school but found it difficult to find time between shift work and keeping a home. "So when I retired I took a correspondence course but I wasn't too faithful," she said. Irene worked with a tutor for two years as she learned to bet- ter express herself in English. They got together ever sec- ond week over the two year period. The tutor helped her with spelling, grammar and composition. "She has helped me to express myself, not so much with pronunciation, but with clarifying things that maybe I had said a little backwards," she said. A real measure of Irene's improvement can be seen in a story she tells of her children. "My children tell me I have progressed because they have no more fun with Mama's let- ters," she said. Irene's children used to take her letters to their office, show it to their friends and say "This is Mama's letter - can you understand that!'. They had to decipher the French out of it. "Now they say "We have no more fun Mum!' " Irene said with a laugh. Learning to better express herself in English has opened new opportunities for Irene. Irene has recently moved to ° Thunder Bay where she will again get in touch with a litera- cy program. She said she wants to finish Grade 11 English, see what Confederation College has to offer and eventually learn to keep books. "To me, life doesn't stop [after work]. You have to keep on going. As far as education - you have to keep on going.
