Page 15, News, Tuesday, September 17 1991 Backyard wildlife sanctuaries in Rossport Rossport residents have begun their own contribution to wildlife that visits and resides in their area. Many have established their property as a Backyard Wildlife Sanctu- ary. It is their hope that all who feed the birds and enjoy watch- ing the wildlife that visit will become a part of this newly created Backyard Wildlife Sanctuary Program of Ontario. "More than 70 per cent of Ontario residents participate in non-consumptive wildlife activities around their homes and camps. Over the years we have watched a decline in wildlife populations. It is now important that we try to do our part to help," said Judy Sund- land, originator of the program. By establishing a yard, front or back, as a Backyard Wildlife Sanctuary, a person not only helps wildlife but brings hours Christine Marshall (rig ht) donated this print to the Terrace of pleasure to themselves and family members. ~ An entire packet is avail- able that includes an all weather sign to be posted, des- ignating the property a 'Back- yard Wildlife Sanctuary.' Kerry, Cheryl and Keri-Beth Quennell Sundland said that some people may be reluctant to enroll their home or camp as a backyard wildlife sanctuary because they think their yard is not worthy of the program. However, she said the most important qualification for becoming a backyard manager is an attitude of caring and concern for wildlife in their yard. If a person wants to do more for wildlife in their yard, the packet includes hints for additional plants, trees, bird- baths, etc. Nicol Island residents are working towards establishing all their waterfront properties as sanctuaries and along with Rossport residents encourage everyone, living on the water or in town to join. "It's been interesting to watch people join and then remember a relative or friend who enjoys birds and get a packet for them - making a wonderful chain reaction," Sundland said. 'It would be nice to see sanctuaries throughout all of Ontario - what a networking of record keeping for unusual species and changes in the environment!"
