Page 11, News, Tuesday, July 16, 1991 Green Cones are busy digesting Terrace Bay's Kitchen waste by Kelly Moore The News The Green Cone has landed in a backyard near you. But how effective is this latest envi- ronmental product? Brenda Cottrell, spokesper- son. -.for the -- Terrace Bay/Schreiber Environmental Awareness Group Encouraging Recycling (EAGER) uses a Green Cone along with a larger - composter for garden materials. She encourages more people to compost wastes. "The Green Cone is good because it is supposed to com- post faster than other products," she said. However, it is difficult to determine how well it works for this area until next spring when it has gone through a complete cycle, she added. The Green Cone works by taking all organic kitchen waste and, using the sun's heat, com- posting the material quickly and efficiently. It was created to reduce the amount of garbage sent from households to landfill sites. The digestion chamber, where the waste is. collected, is buried and the exposed part of the Cone acts as a solar heat trap. The warm air circulates throughout the chambers, accelerating the composting process. Wastes recommended for Green Cone use include all organic food scraps including meat, fish, poultry and dairy products, as well as wood ashes. Paper, plastic, metal, glass, and large quantities of material are not acceptable. The ideal location for the Cone is a sunny area with good soil drainage. The digestion chamber should be surrounded by loose dirt to allow natural microbes to aid in the break down of the waste. The Green Cone can be used The Green Cone is usually free of odours, and it is designed with a tight lid and safety bar to keep animals out. The Cones were made avail- able to residents of Terrace Bay through grants from the Provin- cial Government and the Town- ship. Christine Broughton, Deputy Clerk-Treasurer for the Town- ship, considers the project to have been very successful as there was a strong response from the community. The number of applications received exceeded the limit of the 50 Green Cones available. She said the Township will consider applying for a similar in winter, but the level of waste project next year. will rise as the material freezes.
