Community Vision workshop held in Rossport The Rossport Area Conservation and Development Group held another Community Vision workshop at the Rossport Community Hall, May 3 -4, that was designed to take stock of important community developments since the first workshop held in April, 1990. The 1990 workshop drew up a statement of Rossport's community principles: favouring controlled development, preserving the natural environment and enhancing the village's high level of community cohesion. "The 1990 Vision Statement also set out a list of objectives, many of which have since been accomplished," said Mary Burnett, chair of the RACDG. Education is for Life Area schools active with Education Week by Rob Cotton The News Students in the schools of Schreiber and Terrace Bay joined the rest of the province last week in celebrating Education Week. This years theme was Education is for Life and the variety of activities, ranging from environmental projects to learning about the cultural of First Nations,, certainly reflected all that is to be'in life. Lake Superior High School Lake Superior High School started the week off with an ambitious production of the musical Oliver. The cast included students from the elementary schools. Nearly all of the students of LSHS had a hand in the production whether it was in building sets, painting the backdrop or. greeting people at the door. On Wednesday evening LSHS held the official opening of the recent renovations. Trustees from the Lake Superior Board of Education, local officials, parents and students gathered in the auditorium to unveil the plaque and receive the key . The Grade 9 music class entertained with several selections and cast members of Oliver gave a_ reprise performance. Holy Angels School Schreiber Mr. Goodchild, the drumkeeper at Pays Plat was at Holy Angels School to explain to the students the significance and importance of drums and dancing to the people of the First Nations. During the week , Mrs. Speziale led each class in an aerobic workout, there was a book fair and a presentation by the Ministry of Natural Resources on National Forest Week and grade 7 & 8's went to the mine safety and rescue demonstrations. Terrace Bay Public School Terrace Bay Public School hosted the Lake Superior Board of Education's Oral Communications Festival. Student speakers from Terrace Bay, Schreiber, Marathon and Manitouwadge Public Schools, winners at the school level, assembled, not to compete, but to celebrate the level of excellence they had acheived. The students spoke on subjects that not only were of interest and importance to them but also reflected their own experiences. Students also took place in Pitch-in-Week through an Adopt-a-Lot program and took in a National Forest Week presentation by the MNR. Among the many activities was a Reading Fair, a Primary Science Presentation, a Newspaper Scavenger Hunt and presentations on Japanese culture. The school choir travelled to Marathon to take part in Lake Superior Board of Education Elementary School Music Festival. St. Martin School -Terrace Bay St. Martin School in Terrace Bay opened the week with an assembly of students and parents in the school gym.
