National Forest Week photo by Rob Cotton Tomorrow's forest Is today' S Challenge The Ministry of Natural Resources will be hosting a number of events around the province for National Forest Week, May 5 to 11. Over the Last year Terrace Bay District has been very active in forest management activities. "National Forest Week is a time for all of us to reflect on the good things we get from the forest, like clean air, water, jobs, wildlife and scenic beauty," said Ron Running District Manager for the Terrace Bay District. He said his staff will be talking to school classes during the week. Ed Tear, forest management supervisor for the district said the forestry staff have been very busy over the winter preparing the Timber Management Plan for the Big Pic Management. Students clean up Schreiber Creek by Rob Cotton The News Morning sun glistened of the water of the swollen creek as it swept over its gravel streambed, parting only for deadfalls, rocks, an abandoned tricycle and a rusty exhaust pipe. Two car batteries sat on the bank up-stream from a culvert. Below the culvert, caught in the branches of overhanging bushes were plastic bags, soggy cardboard and other assorted garbage. This is how Schreiber Creek appeared on Monday moming, April 29, when Grade 7 and 8 students from Schreiber Public School arrived at Langworthy Street to begin their part of the Schools' stream rehabilitation project. Two rows of trees planted on stream bank The Grade 7 & 8's began by planting two rows of white spruce, approximately 250 trees, along the west bank of the creek north of Langworthy Street. Then they concentrated on picking up the garbage scattered along the banks and around the culvert. Downstream, south of Newman St., the high water and steep banks created a potential safety problem so the Grade 4's concentrated on cleaning up the garbage along the road and hillside. Grades 5 and 6 spent the afternoon working on the stream between Langworthy . Street and Newman Street. "This is a nice cold water stream and there is good fish habitat in it," said Mike Kenny, conservation officer with the' Ministry of Natural Resources. "What the students are trying to do is improve the habitat for the Rainbow and other fish that do come up that stream," he explained. Stream rehabilitation is a two year project The MNR is assisting the school with the two year project and supplied the young trees for planting. The trees will provide shade, keeping the water colder and improving the fish habitat, Kenny added. He said people haven't been thinking about their actions and have been treating the stream like a dump. "Fortunately these students are really concerned about the creek and want to do something to help, " he continued. "T think a lot of adults, who have been taking Schreiber Creek for granted, will learn to appreciate it - seeing it through the eyes of their children." The original idea for the creek clean-up project came from the students, said Gail Davies, principal of Schreiber Public School. They noticed the creek and the shape it was in during the Pitch-In clean-up last year, she added.
