The fire started in one of the buildings' five apartments in Nick's Sport Shop and Apartments on Winnipeg Street. and was caused by a cigarette, said Deputy Chief Gene Ross of the Schreiber Volunteer Fire Department. The building is owned by Nick Commisso of Schreiber. Fireman received the call at 10:50 Saturday morming*and spent the remainder of the day extinguishing the blaze and cleaning up the area. No fatalies or injuries There were no fatalities or injuries but apartment residents lost many of their belongings. A call went out for donations of clothing and blankets for fire victims. By the end of the day there were 16 of the Volunteer Fire Department's 21 volunteers firefighters on the scene. The help of four reserve firefighters was also enlisted. Schreiber Hydro was called to disconnect the hydro lines and Larry Morin remained with his cherry-picker to direct water onto the top of the burning building. Ross said the new water system provided lots of water and the new pumper was a real asset in controlling and extinguishing the fire. Problem with water drainage There was a problem, because of the frozen ground, in getting the water to drain away properly. Some water did get in the basements of the Anglican Church and other nearby buildings. Once this problem was recognized dikes were built to restrict the flow of water. Firefighters also responded to two other calls last week. On Sunday, April 7, problems with a woodstove at 127 Sunset Drive filled the house with smoke causing smoke damage. On Monday morning, April 8, firefighters put out a fire in an overheated van, five kilometers west of Schreiber on Hwy 17. Making sure Members of the Schreiber Volunteer Fire Department were still watching the burning remains of Nick's Sport Shop and Apartments at 4:30 p.m. and putting out small eruptions of flames.
