The funds will be used to- continue tourism development in the community. The majority of the money, $225,000, will be used develop the Aguasabon Gorge and the beach area at the mouth of the Aguasabon River. ®~ Dave Fulton, clerk-treasurer for the Township of Terrace Bay, said the beach will be developed into a park, possibly with a picnic area, a playground and parking. Work will also be done to improve the access to the Aguasabon Gorge and make the area safer. Fulton said improved parking, viewing platforms and trails are all possibilities. "We hope to have. the consultants working by mid- 'April, the plans finished by the middle of August and construction -- started by September," he said. to receive a further $75,000 for this work from the regular budget of the Ministry of Northern Development, he added. The NDP's_ recession fighting fund will-also provide $75,000 towards the cost of removing the shoal blocking the mouth of the river. Fulton said the shoal, presently only a few feet under the water, needs to be blasted out to provide a clearance of about 8 feet for boats entering the river. This work is expected to be completed this year at a total cost of about $100,000. The remaining funds, $18,800, will be used to construct an observation deck on the hill behind the new tourist information centre. Construction on this project is expected to begin this spring or early summer. The total cost of the deck and access to it will be around $25,000, Fulton said. George Tough, deputy minister of natural resources, announced the reorganization last week. In an MNR press release the deputy minister said, "Reorganization will allow us to better focus our people and resources in front-line resource management. It will allow us to streamline our administrative processes and help us do a better job of serving the public and the resources." He pointed out that the size of the ministry its field. "All communities that now have an MNR district office will continue to have a significant MNR presence, although whe office's function may change." The four new administrative regions are based on the ecological regions of Ontario. They are the Boreal West Region, the Boreal. East Region, the Great Lakes Region and the Southern Region. The four regional offices will . be located in Thunder Bay, Cochrane/Timmins, Huntsville and Aurora respectively. Regional offices will be involved in planning, collecting and transferring resource management information to district and area offices. They will also deliver three operational functions: provincial parks; fire management, emergency response, aviation services and; engineering services.
