Page 9, News, Tuesday, February 19, 1991 Jackrabbits invade Aguasabon golf course by Rob Cotton The News Every Sunday afternoon you're likely to find half-a- hundred jackrabbits frolicking about the links at the Aquasa- bon Golf Club in Terrace Bay. These jackrabbits are not, however, the fur-bearing. kind. They are children and they're learning to cross country ski. Lisa Jacques of the Superior Cross Country Club said the Jackrabbit program has been very successful with 46 children involved. "The club started it up to see what kind of response there would be - we never thought we'd get the number of kids we did," she said. The program runs from the end of September right through to the beginning of June and the children are given awards and crest when they reach certain skill levels. Jacques said that eventually young skiers can be taken out of the area for races with children in other programs associated with The Cross Country Ski Canada Jackrabbit Ski League. The league, named after the legendary Herman (Jackrabbit) Smith, has over 10,000 youth participants and 1,500 leaders, is the largest organized: skiing program in North America and celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Both Marathon and Thunder Bay have Jackrabbit programs. "The thing that is so amazing," Jacques said, "is that these kids get-on skis for the first time in their lives and they can do it - ski." The young skiers, aged 4 - 14, are split into groups, ac- cording to age and skills, taken by an instructor to various parts of the golf course. The club has since improv- ed the trails by levelling and widening them and taking out bad.comers and hills. At one time you could only use the traditional stride method of skiing but skiers can now skate-ski along the trails. The trails are 14-16 feet wide with one set of tracks on the left and another on the right. The middle of the track is used for skate-skiing. The Club has members from Terrace Bay Schreiber and Rossport. Although skiers don't have to pay to use the trails because they are on Crown land, the Club encourages members to take out a membership. The membership fee goes towards maintaining the trails which includes: brushing in the spring and fall, packing once the snow flies and then grooming. Jacques said the major goal of the Club is buy a doubled- tracked snow machine to maintain and groom the trails. "The one presently being used is on loan from the MNR. It is 11_years old," she said, "The club has only been able to use it twice this year. It lost second gear and has been in the garage." : The Club has also organized clinics to introduce adults to the sport of cross country skiing. The clinics cover both skiing and waxing techniques. At approximately 5.40 p.m. on the Jan 23, 1991, an older model skidoo, orange in colour with black numbers on the side, hit a 1989 black Ford Probe GL, 2 doors, which was parked'in front of the victim's residence, on Columbia Street in Schreib- er. The suspect skidoo then left the scene. Witness advises that sus- pect driver was wearing a black helmet, jacket of sus- pect had carmel coloured sleeves, was of a thin build and approx. 5'6" - 5'10" tall. There were no pieces of the machine left at the scene, however, orange paint appears on the lower bumper of the victim's vehicle. The suspect skidoo should have damage to the right front cor- ner.
