Page 11, News, Tuesday, January 15, 1991 Carolyn's Critique Tales from the Darkside Rating: 0 poor....10 excellent Starring: Deborah Harry, Christian Slater, David Johansen, Rae Dawn Chong, Robert Klein This movie has three sepa- rate stories all intertwined by a wrap-around story. Betty, a young homemaker, is getting things ready for a dinner party she is having that night. She uripacks the gro- ceries, gets bowls ready and takes out knives. She then walks over and opens a door. On the inside is a cage. In the cage is a small boy chained to the wall. Betty: has gone to The Marquis De Sade School of Cooking. She is planning to gut, stuff, roast and serve poor Timmy. 'What to do! What to do! Well, being the smart boy he is, Timmy gets her interested in listening to a story from a book. The book is called "Tales from the Darkside" and is Betty's favorite book. She figures that she has a little time before she has to put Timmy in the oven, so she stops to listen. Timmy weaves three stories of terror, revenge, and doomed love. In Lot 249 a university student calls up an ancient mummy from the dead, to extract revenge on three stu- dents who cheated him out of a fellowship. In Cat From Hell, an old man hires a hit man to rub out a cat. A cat, you ask? Yes, a Cat. This satanic feline has already killed 3 people and the old guy is next. The hit man is left alone in the mansion with the cat. After a long game of cat and mouse ( guess who's the mouse here) we are reminded of that old adage "A dog is man's best friend!" In Lover's Vow, a down and out artist watches as his best friend gets ripped apart by a gargol. He figures his number is up, but the creature will let him go if he promises to never tell anyone what he saw. He promises, runs away and then meets the woman of his dreams. 10 years later, they are married, has two kids and he's a very successful artist. Is this enough? Nooo! He just can't keep the secret any- more and he tells his wife the truth about the night they met. Big mistake! 'Always remember folks, if you want to make a promise, be sure-it's one you can keep. Now we're back to Betty. Timmy definitely has to go into the oven if he's to cook in time. (Nothing worse than an undercooked kid, right?) She opens the cage and pushes her cart, covered with knives and needles into it. Timmy tries to distract her with a story about himself, but she isn't buying it. When she turns to draw out _ a knife, he throws marbles on the floor. Betty trips, falls on the cart, gets up, drops the key to the chains. Oh dear! Hurry Timmy, get the keys! Here she comes! Hurry, hurry! I'll leave you with that thought. If you want to know what happens to Timmy, rent the movie. I give it a 10. To all the Businesses and to all the other people who made-donations of money, food and clothes. To the people who sent those beautiful Christmas cards. To Kimberly Clark for giving me_a place to stay, and to Doris Walton and her crew. I have been asked a few times in the past why I still live here now that I m retired. I can honestly say, its the people. Thanks again- Chuck Bougie | the exploitation, industrialization, and maritime legacy of the lakes. Today, the lakes are on the brink of. environmental disaster. One example was the accidental introduction into them of a parasitic sea lamprey that is almost destroying the Great Lakes' fishing industry. Today, the focus is on ecological preservation and the program will illustrate how much of the lakes' economy has turned from industry to recreation. rm peel J, Beta Sigma Phi supports CAP Wes Fenton of the Terrace Bay Police Force accepts a cheque for $183 from Lisette McGee, (left) president of the Terrace Bay Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi and Bronwyn Sands (centre), chair of the committee that raised the funds.
