Pet Talk Hip Dysplasia common among large dog breeds by Alice Scott Many large breeds of dogs are affected by rear end lameness caused by Hip Dysplasia. What exactly is Hip Dysplasia? It all lies in the structure of the hip joint. The head of the femur (thigh bone) should sit solidly in the acetabulum (cup). In Hip Dysplasia loose ligaments allow the head to work free. Also if the cup is shallow, it causes joint lax-_ ity. Environmental factors, includ- ing weight and nutrition of a growing puppy can figure into the final outcome of a puppy prone to Hip Dysplasia. Hip Dysplasia is a moderately heritable condition. But even if the parents have normal hips, a pup can develop dysplasia. Signs may appear during a time of rapid growth (four to nine months) A puppy may limp or have a swaying gait when he walks or runs. If your puppy shows these signs then he should be x-rayed by your vet. The hips are then graded according to the severity of joint changes on the X-ray. Sih AB vn --On Meher (Ontario Veterinary College) in Guelph examines the x-rays to determine the severity of dysplasia. Orthopedic advancements have now made it possible for dogs with severe Hip Dysplasia to live long and normal lives. Replacement of the femoral head by a surgeon can relieve your pet of pain and discomfort. Always feed your puppy a good quality food. Watch his weight, being too heavy or thin can cause orthopedic problems. Vitamin C, has been recom- mended by some vets for Hip Dysplasia, but research has not proved this, as yet. Cold weather and too much exercise can cause pain to dogs with Hip Dysplasia, so keep them indoors during the winter.
