White ribbon -- campaign aimed at pornography ~ People who object to the pornography industry will be dis- playing white ribbons on their persons, on their cars or in their windows, between Oct. 28, and Nov.4. The White Ribbons Against Pornography campaign, spon- sored across Canada by the Canadians for Decency Organization and the Catholic Woman's League, is designed to allow people to voice their silent objections and indicate their awareness of the problem. According to a press release issued by the organizers of the WRAP campaign, Canada's pornography industry rakes in 500 million dollars a year, more money than the conventional film and record industry combined. Residents concerned Schreiber's air quality is still being questioned by Robert Cotton The News Concentrations of cadmium, copper and zinc in Schreiber's air met Ministry ol ie Environment's regulations from early 1989 to May 1990 = accord- ing to a MOE air quality report issued this month. - However, the MOE report said metal levels on CP Rail property were still above normal and con- taminant guidelines continued to occasionally be exceeded on nearby residential properties. . The suspended particulate and dustfall comes from an ore con- centrate transshipment area on Highway 17, east of Schreiber. The site is operated by CP Rail to transport zinc and copper con- centrates from the Minnova Mine site at Winston Lake to a refinery in Montreal. _ Members of the Concerned Citizens of Schreiber, are con- cemed about having the transfer - site right in the town. Kristen Scriver, a member of the Committee, said quite a few people are having health prob- lems. She has been up all night, for the past two nights, dealing with her child's breathing problem. "She doesn't have asthma," Scriver said. "I went outside last night and the wind was coming right off those facilities." Scriver feels that guidelines and acceptable limits don't mean anything because they don't really know just how harmful the air- borne concentrates and dust can be. The mineral transfer site is within 2km of every residence in town, including schools homes and gardens. No other town in Ontario has a transfer facility right in town. According to the MOE report, two of 82 samples had a total - suspended particulate level above - the maximum acceptable limit. continued on page 3 oe 5) \ so DIANNE O'NEILL TERRACE BAY INSURANC ; A COMPLETE INSURANCE SERVICE - COMPETITIVE RATES FOR QUALITY COVERAGE SIMCOE PLAZA TERRACE BAY 825 - 3246 E LTD. * Home * Business * Auto *Cottages | * Recreational Vehicles * Etc.
