In the past few months, there have been quite a few incidents of vandalism and petty thefts. Much of the goings-on is quite inexcusable in the Terrace Bay Police's eyes. Cars have had the paint scratched, had articles stolen from them, and trucks have been stolen and damaged. You don't expect things like this to happen in a small town but unfortunately they are happen- ing...and lately quite regularly. It's up. to the town citizens to do something about it. If you see something you find unusual or suspicious report it to the police. By not doing anything about it, you can only make yourself more susceptible to being the next victim. Face it, there aren't that many cars in this town so the possibility of your car being van- dalized is greater. : Another problem encountered (not so much in small towns) is thieves selling stolen property. "If you buy something hot you've probably made yourself the next victim," said Chief Kidder. "A thief in dire need of money can turn you (a person who bought hot property) in to Crime Stoppers and then collect money from both ends. Or quite often a caught thief will notify the police where the stolen goods are to lessen his punishment." It seems no one ever wants to do something until something happens to their own property. "Every citizen has a job to inform and work with the police," said Kidder. People are still reluctant to phone an organization like Crime Stoppers.. What a lot of people don't realize is - you will remain completely anonymous if you wish. Successful Fall Fair This year's Fall Fair in Terrace Bay was extremely successful. Exhibitors came from Thunder Bay, Wawa, Red Rock, Marathon, Sault Ste. Marie, Schreiber and Terrace Bay. We had over 70 exhibitors at the 9th Annual Fair, with a large variety of merchandise for sale and display. Record crowds attended the show. Once again, the Multicultural Association presented a colourful and entertaining performance. If you phone in information about a crime, you are given a number. Your name and address is not needed unless you want to give it. The police will use the informa- tion and if it results in the solving of the crime there is a reward offered. The reward can be picked up by giving your number at a police location of your choice. All you do is say "I'm number so-and-so" and you are given the money. Very few citizens who give information to the police want the money but do it as a good turn. People who accept the money should not feel guilty about it _ either. "There is nothing morally wrong with collecting money," said Kidder. It seems that although the 'no-parking- signs' have been erected on Highway 17 in Terrace Bay, transports are still continuing to park along the road. It was confirmed that the Township will be able to rent a residence, of the size required in Terrace Bay, for use by a doctor working out of the Schreiber Medical Centre. Paving at Centennial Drive has been completed. The re-zoning process for the cemetary land in the Terrace Bay Township commenced. By-law 14-90 was enacted to prohibit the blowing of train whistles at Main Street and rail- way crossing. Terrace Council Briefs A. Terrace Bay Council meet- ing was held on September 10th. All councillors, the Clerk- Treasurer Administrator, and the Deputy Clerk-Treasurer are authorized to attend the Municipal Electric Association, District Number Three Conference and Annual Meeting September 23-25 in Atikokan. September 23-29 is pro- claimed as "Building Regulations Awareness Week" in _ the Township of Terrace Bay. All members of council are authorized to attend the North of Superior Programs Meeting in Manitouwadge on October 18. Thursday, September 27 will be declared "TVOntario Day" in the Township of Terrace Bay. Jim Ziegler and Chief Kidder are authorized to attend the Municipal Police Authorities 1990 Fall Conference in Ottawa on October 14- 16. Council donated $50.00 to Terrace Bay Junior Golf Club. Elizabeth Singleton is appoint- ed to the North Shore Family Resource Centre Committee for the current term of council. Bill Houston will attend the Thunder Bay District Municipal League Ist quarterly meeting in Geraldton on September 7 and 8.
