Safety was a key issue, and it was decided that allowing more than twelve people in would be dangerous. Yet now, many people are forced to wait in the hallway Library may temporarily be in Rec Centre Concerns voiced over possible location By Angie Saunders The News There has been a difference of opinion on the proposed tempo- rary moving of the Schreiber Library to the Rec Centre. This year marks the 10th nniversary of Terry Fox's arathon of Hope. Terry's par- nts, Betty and Rolly Fox, will be etracing his route through Ontario from August 2 to September 1, 1990 in order to Imeet and thank all those who were involved in 1980 and who have supported the Run since HOth Anniversary Marathon of Hope A few people are concerned about this possible location. "Some of the activity at the library might be diminished if the - library is moved to the recreation complex," said Schreiber resident Georgette Cebrario, "The trans- then. The Terry Fox Run office (1- 800-267-TOUR) would like to know it you met Terry during his Marathon of Hope in the summer of 1980. Stories you may have about Terry during his time in Ontario would also be appreciat- ed. FL?» ay" Wou Chere Canada highway must be crossed which will limit access for a lot of young people. Many of our senior citizens do not drive and will not be able to use these facil- ities, especially during the cold winter months." The Library and Ontario Hydro are both located in the old Town Hall on the corner of Scotia and Winnipeg Street. The Township of Schreiber pays for the heating and hydro in the big building which is 68 years old. "Council wants to eventually tear down the old Town Hall, It is not energy efficient," said Town Clerk Aurel Gauthier, "Council will have to consider whether they want to move or not. These are just preliminary plans. It's unofficial. We have suggestions of what we will do but haven't told them (Library) what they will do. We are looking for a place to put them temporari- ly and the Rec Centre is one of the suggestions." "One of the rooms at the Rec Centre is a possibility," said Gauthier. "In the long run we want to improve the facilities. We want to put up a new town hall. There will be municipal offices and a new library in the hall. It will be a more efficient building." "There is funding involved. Tearing down the old town hall is not so much a big cost - the big cost is putting up a new build- ing." before they get a chance to do their workout. More people, including women, are becoming interested in the sport. During the busy hours in the evening people have had to wait for up to an hour. Fifteen concerned people attended a recreation committee meeting on Tuesday, August 7 to voice their concerns and to sug- gest possible solutions to the problem. Everyone agreed that the 12 person limit must be enforced, because there is simply not enough room for larger num- bers. "It's a growing sport and everyone wants to get involved," said Randy Kostecki, who uses the weight room regularly. The possibility of switching the current games room with the weight room was discussed. The weight room is a little more than 900 square feet in size, and the move to the 1200 square foot room that now houses the video games would be a definite improvement. ; "We still have to set some lim- its, even if we make it bigger," said Chris Joubert. He expressed concern that even if the weight room was expanded, it too might eventually not be able to keep.up with the demand. "We know what the problem is now," said Joubert. "Where will we be in a year or two years?" A suggestion was made that group of weight lifters and recre- ation committee members meet to decide upon new rules for the use of the weight room. Unfortunately, there have been past problems with people drop- ping the equipment and not putting it away. "We can write up the rules, but enforcing them is a whole differ- ent problem," said Dean Main, the director of the recreation cen- tre. Yet he recognized the fact that most people used the equip- ment responsibly. The recreation committee will put together a report, and bring the need to expand the weight room to the attention of the Terrace Bay Council. Any deci- sions regarding either a new loca- tion or a larger weight room will be made by council.
